Background
[I have a month old 10gal walstad, was uncycled for a while w/ ammonia etc but doing great as far as plants and snails go. Went to a lfs to get a heater and brought my water with me cause it’d been a while since I tested it (previous reading .25ppm ammonia, idk nitrite don’t have the test, 20ppm nitrate) and discovered whaddya know, 0’s across the board. I was going to wait to get some fish but they had one gorgeous little fish, exactly what I’d planned to order online (green lantern platy) and I figured with my plant load one platy should be totally fine. Got a few shrimp as well. Something to note is that this lfs/pet store was garbage tier, dead fish everywhere, gnarly looking tanks and guppies in with bettas. Anyways not necessarily super relavent but that was 3 days ago and today I thought I saw what looked to be a little white thing hanging off my platy’s chin. I hadn’t noticed anything before because she is turquoise on the top and white everywhere else, so it’s very hard to see if there might be a problem there unless she’s right up against the glass. She is extremely healthy looking, swims like 90mph, eats voraciously, fins flared and scales shiny. The only behavior that worries me is sometimes she opens her mouth as if she’s yawning, sometimes a few times in a row. The white dangly thing went away (I thought it might have been a planaria stuck to her chin, she tries to eat them from the glass and they are stuck to my snails) but I managed to get a much closer look while enticing her with the food pipette and it looks as though there might be a fuzzy patch not exactly on her mouth but just below it. I’m really not sure. I might be hallucinating the fuzzy and it might just be a funny lump. I’ll include some images.]
tl;dr
Fish: platy
Symptoms: occasional mouth stretching/yawning, large white dangly thing on chin but gone now, small area where there might be a white lump, possibly fuzzy, beneath chin. Seems healthy/lively behavior
Water quality: 0 ammonia, nitrites, low nitrate. No filter
Could it be mouth rot??? It’s not ON her lips, but just beneath them. Is there something else it could be?
extra questions: if I dose with something, what should I use? Should I dose in the tank or dose the fish in a quarantine tank?
thank you for any responses
