HI all,
First post.
I had a 72g bow front with a 40 gallon fuge for my red eared slider... lost all that in a move. starting over I have a petco 75g, and will be getting another 75 for a fuge.
Because I have the opportunity to start over, and because I'm going bigger, had a couple questions.
Before the questions a couple of pictures of my old fuge before and after of 6 months or so:

it was a simple pvc siphon to the tank, had 3 plexiglass dividers and pump back to the tank.
question 1. you can see the algae line right below the sand, will an algae scrubber help remove that line... my only real algae buildup was in the fuge. which also brings the question can you have a freshwater refugium and an algae scrubber in the line of your "plumbing" and they both work as they are generally suppose to? [side note on that is I would GUESS the algae scrubber wouldnt work as well.. ie growth rate would be weaker due to less nutrition in the water being after the planted fuge/filter]
question 2: I wanted a diy 55 gallon upflow pond filter as extra filtration, as well as extra water surface area. it would go turtle tank, to fuge, to 55 gallon rain barrel with plastic pot scrubbies to turtle tank. if I did it that could I have the algae scrubber waterfall into the turtle tank or would I have to go inline off barrel then to a holding tank with the pump to get it back to the turtle tank.
question 3. I noticed when the plants started getting bigger there was whiteish worms crawling around under the gravel, don't know what they were.. but with this fuge I plan on having live bearing fish (mollies guppies ect) as turtle feeder fish.. I don't want the worms to infect the turtle.. what were they and how do I get rid of them, or at least keep them tiny/not visible.
I'm sure there will be a lot of people that will say ohh your doing it wrong or whatever, I wanted to get away from using a traditional filtration system so I didnt have to constantly buy or clean. sounds lazy but this setup worked really well. daily 5 gallon bucket water change that took all of 5 minutes, water looked generally clear. no tests done... point is I liked the setup, and it worked for me; so positive feedback only please.
