ADF's and other fish

HI everyone,

I have successfully kept 2 ADF's now for 1 and a half years. I am interested in now getting a larger tank and would like to keep fish also.

I know that sometimes ADF's tend to do better in a species only tank, but has anyone had success mixing them with other fish?

I have been told that tetra's or gourami's may be more peaceful fish to keep with ADF's. There is so many different opinions that I'm a bit confused!

I don't want my frogs/new fish to become stressed ! (I know that barb's/angel fish are not a good idea however)

Thanks for any help/advice

Siobhan

hi....hmmm, I personally wouldn't risk it at this point. they've been alone for this long...they probably would become stressed, no matter what kind of fish you put in.

but, if you do want fish no matter what...I would get some small, peaceful ones. not gouramis....unless a sparkling, croaking or a honey gourami. the others will be too much for the frogs. the tetras...it depends what kind. cardinals/neons/black neons, harlequin/espeI rasboras would work.

I keep mine with a dwarf gourami, flame tetras, otos, and various inverts. It is a lot of extra work to keep them in a community tank. I had to "train" them to eat out of a dish so they could find their food. If you don't want to do this you can hand feed them. Either way, you MUST make sure that they are eating. That seems to be the biggest problem with keeping them in a community tank. Besides that you should also make sure that they have somewhere to hide. They like their alone time and need a cave or two. Also, just because my tank has worked thus far doesn't mean that it will work every time. My DG is pretty spastic and is always swimming from one side of the tank to the other but is not aggressive. Another DG may be super aggressive.

The bottom line is be prepared to do some extra work and have a back up plan in case it doesn't work out.

I keep mine with a betta, but again that's a case-by-case basis thing. I do have to hand feed them or else they would starve and I'd have a very fat betta.

If your having such success now with keeping them alone, why not leave them there and let them live out their lives and you yourself could still get the new tank without putting the frogs through all the stress.

If you still want to get a larger tank and have them in a community, get a tank that is not higher than 12-18". More than this and the frogs will have a hard time swimming to the surface to get air.

Also, you will need to hand feed or "train" them to wait at a specific spot for food like what Megan did. ADFs will be out-competed for food every time in a community set up. they just don't fight for their food. They also don't have the best vision and rely mostly on their sense of smell to find food. By the time they realize its feeding time, no food will be left. That is why you have to hand feeding is necessary in a community. You put the food right in their face for them. Its much easier to keep them in a species only tank IMO.

Tank mates that will work are peaceful tetras, the more docile gouramis, shrimp, rasboras.
