ADF Singing.... do both males and females?

So I've had my ADF for awhile now.....

One is about twice the size of the other - they both seem very healthy. The larger one tends to hide more however after finally getting my tank in something approaching a cleanable configuration I do see them both pop out during the day as well as the evening now

However my big question is do both males and females sing? I *think* due to the size difference (they were both the same size when I originally got them) that I have a male and a female. And I know at least ONE is definitely singing. I can hear him now as I sit here typing this.... weird highpitched buzzz/purrr sound. Its nice.... but was so strange the first time I heard and and thought my computer was about to explode.

So.... do just males sing?

Only males sing Males can sing before they can be fully sexed. So, you do have at least one male

Thanks Akari, I saw you answering other adf threads and hope you'd help

Also, females are generally the larger ones? Do males / females grow slower?

You're welcome

They grow depending on food quality and quantity. Mine about doubled in size in just a few weeks. Females will be slightly larger, and have rounder tummies. You can tell my male from my females just be looking at them. My females are full of eggs, and at chubby LOL

A few weeks? Wow mine haven't grown that fast but they certainlly grown a lot now when I go to teh store their ones are _so_ small

Well yeah I think pretty sure then I have a male and female. Hopefully one day maybe I'll get eggs or tadpols, tho I doubt they'd ever survive. I won't be doing anything extra to help them tho it'd be nice if one or two did!

Tadpoles are extremely hard to raise. I want to give it a try some day, though

Where do you get all those great frog information pictures?

Well, I must confess, I took the picture of the guitar-playing frog from the internet. But all the others I've created myself using photos of my own frogs and a Paint program, like this photo I use to demonstrate the differences between male and female ADFs. . . - frogbreeder

I think this is the male?

More outgoing, smaller, longer "tail" nub.

Its hard to say. A clear picture from the side would help

Yes, hard to say for sure, but judging by the thickness of its forearms and thin body structure, I'd have to agree it looks like a young male. Looking from the side, can you see a bump or raised area in its armpit region? If so, it's likely male. - frogbreeder

Well hes definitely smaller than the other one - no sign of a lump yet tho iirc his armpit looks whiter?

Well, he's probably male. As AkarI mentioned, male ADFs often begin to sing before their breeding glands are fully developed. So, he's likely just not fully mature yet. Shouldn't be much longer before you notice little bumps appear in his armpit regions. Then, he'll start hugging the larger one. LOL. - frogbreeder

Kinda looks like a female to me. Nice a fat lol But its arms are real think, so I'm not too sure.

But its hard to sex young frogs. Males look like females until they start singing and grow their little arm pit bumps.

Another Photo - I was looking closely though one side of the tank and BOTH frogs came out, and sat staring out the side of the tank at me. I'd just put some brine shrimp in for the first time and they didn't seem to sure, but were very interested in the movement they could see on the other side of the glass!

I think thatm ight of been a snail on the glass, but yeah I see what you mean

(It quite possibly was bump on his underarm, but I was taking the photo from the side, while looking in the front so I couldn't see)

Yes, he sure is buff. I bet he's been sneaking off to the gym on a regular basis; either that or he has a Bow-flex machine hidden somewhere in his aquarium. He's definitely male and a very handsome one at that; females have much thinner forearms and bigger bellies.

DjSmiley's frog sure is buff. Speaking of buff frogs, here is a link to a recent thread that contains one of the funniest ADFs videos I've ever seen posted. It's very well done and absolutely hilarious. Enjoy. - frogbreeder

Yep, definitely too many push-ups. You sure you didn't let him see that video? I'm certain he's got a Bow-flex machine hidden in there somewhere! - frogbreeder

More updates (no more pics yet).

I swapped out the giant peice of mopanI wood for a under water sunken ship peice I got, its hollow as I knew the (suspected) female seemed to like to almost "dig" under the peice of wood making herself a little cave so she has now taken up residence inside the ship instead.

I can hear the male singing very clearly again, I hadn't heard him for a few weeks, possibly due to not being up so late but maybe because he couldn't ever find her to sing to?

His singing is now seemingly hitting a larger "range" of notes, I can hear it physically changing, or maybe that's just me being more used to hearing it. I'm not sure.

I saw them hugging!

The female generally shook the male off quite quickly, but over the last few days I've caught them hugging a few times
