Adding seeded media to sponge filter?

I'm setting up a new shrimp tank, I've had the sponge filter running for a few days and I've been adding fish food to supply ammonia.

All of my other tanks have HOB filters, so I always would just grab a sponge out of one and added it to the new one when starting tanks. I was wondering if there's any way I could add bacteria from one of my older tanks to this new one.

Can I just squeeze a seeded sponge into the water of the new tank?

Yes, it would cut the cycle time. It would not eliminate the cycle altogether, but it should certainly provide a good starter culture of good bacteria. It's the same principle as bottled bacteria for starting a cycle.
