i run a aqueon 30 and 50 in my tank, but as i understand it . the more room you have for beneficial bacteria the more fish you can handle

What kind of filter are you using currently?
In a way yes, it would allow more fish to a certain extent. It could increase surface area for beneficial bacteria. but you'd still have to keep in mind the actual size of the tank.

How are you able to measure how many times the tank is tuned over?

I’m not sure what filter it is. All I know is it is a hob and has place for 4 filter pads.

Do you think it is enough filtration for a 55 gallon tank

Well the filter naked moves 956 gph so with the restrictions of the padding and media the filter is at around 630 gph I have two which makes 1260 gph of possible water movement I have them on a 160g tank

Yes more media more surface area if ur on a smaller tank ur probably best just getting one bigger on say if u have a 40g go with a 100 gph filter

Gp

Jackkelly , here is a LINK to a thread on the forum that may be of interest to you. It will show you how to not rely on cartridges and instead put re-usable media in your filter.

Diy Media Guide For Top Fin Silenstream, Aquaclear And Other Hob Filters | 385506 | Filters and Filtration

It appears you have a Marineland Penguin 350 filter.

Having a second filter doesn't necessarily mean you can add more fish.

If you set up your Penguin by inserting some blocks of foam sponge in lieu of the cartridges will allow you to increase your mechanical natural biological filtration. The link shows how to do this.

Do you have a PetSmart near by?

Also , what fish do you have now, and what fish do you want to add?

Adding a single large sponge filter driven by a decent airpump might be all you need to add.

Islandvic i went to my pet smart and they had a emperor 400 on sale for 40 dollars so I just purchased it.
The tank is 55 gallons and was just purchased as someone was getting rid of their tank and it came with fish.
the stock of the tank is;
2 medium sized angelfish
2 Bolivian rams
7 tiger barbs
3 albino rainbow sharks
2 roseline barb
2 red tailed sharks
1 pictus catfish
1 dwarf gourami
1 clown pleco
1 clown loach

the main reason I wanted to add another filter to the tank was more to make sure that my current stock was supported and would do well. Also wanted to have filtration throughout the whole aquarium as on only one side you run into the issue that the other side of water is stagnant and that only causes issues.
