Adding an HOB filter to my Eheim 2026

I have a 45g planted tank that I set up almost 2 months ago. I used my Aqueon 10 from my established 10 gallon to seed my new tank, setting it up in conjunction with the Eheim 2026 canister I purchased for the 45g. Now that my tank is better established I am wondering whether I should keep using the Aqueon HOB. I think the tank could benefit from having more surface agitation, which I can get from the HOB. I can also fill it with Purigen, which would make it easier for me to check on/recharge the Purigen between major Eheim cleanings. My question comes down to whether or not the Aqueon 10 is sufficient for my needs based on the fact that primary filtration is being done by the 2026. Or should I consider purchasing the AquaClear 50 and stuffing it with Purigen?

Thanks in advance!

Since the canister provides sufficient filtration for your tank, I would think your plan it's fine. You can never have too much filtration, but I think an AC50 filed with purigen might be overkill. If you like having the 10 for supplemental media/surface agitation, by all means leave it on. Plus it will stay cycled in case you need to use that empty 10 gallon for qt/hospital tank.

Good call about the extra filter being a good idea if I need a QT/hospital tank. So would you continue to buy the Aqueon cartridges (I'd rather not use the carbon that those have) or just use the purigen as media or buy a media bag and fill it up with some of my eheim media?

I have an aqueon. I cut a little hole and dumped out the carbon, and just rinse the empty cartridge in tank water. This is my last one, and it's ratty, so soon I'm going to make a new one out of filter pad. Let you know how I end up doing it.. Any available space in) the box could be filed with the media of your choice, really. And since it's extra, and not necessary to the health of your tank, you have a lot of room to experiment to see what works best for you. Then come back and tell me what you found out..
