Adding African dwarf frogs to my betta tank?

Uh.. there shouldn't be any problem? Frogs are relatively shy (unlike, say, bettas) when it comes to unknown things entering their tank, they usually stay in place until it comes to close, then make a lunge for shelter. I haven't ever had trouble with a frog swimming up to my siphon intake, even with 90% changes I still just left them in the tank. Just don't put the intake next to their favourite shelter.

Everything went swimmingly (no pun intended) lol. I was just nervous they'd get accidentally swept up in the siphon because they are so tiny and blend in so well to my tank and aren't good at swimming. They hid in the back and were very (unusually) active and hungry afterwards. I put in some bloodworms and the tank is all happy now with tons of full bellies. I got some cute pictures, I'll share in a bit.

Wish I’d thought of this earlier... for future reference, you might try sticking the siphon in a net so there is a barrier.

Very cute! Looks like it was fed terribly poorly (or not at all) before you got it though, the bony appearance breaks my heart. You should disregard my former advice for a few days/weeks and fatten them up.

You should!! They are hilarious

Thank you!! I figured, but I trusted you as I do not know much about them. So feed once a day for now until they fatten up?

I am feeding them bloodworms, HBH food, and shrimp pellets right now. I’m getting some more frozen types of food this weekend, like brine shrimp and daphnia.

Maybe feed them about 5 days a week for now? (so two fasting days). I think that would be a nice middle ground. They don't really profit from everyday feedings, especially with fattier foods like bloodworms. But yes, do let them build up some weight. I hadn't really noticed in the pictures until I saw these you posted just now, both the front and hind legs look emaciated. Its stomach is full though, so you are feeding them well
Not sure if they'll eat daphnia, they tend to pick and choose what they eat and go for larger, slower moving prey that they can ambush.
Mine are too spoilt and don't really go for any kind of pellets, haha.

Edit: some pictures that may help for comparison. The picture in which they are mating was taken on a fasting day (2nd day of fasting iirc), the other one was taken on a feeding day (non-bloodworms, that always makes them bulge even more).

Update!! I am headed out tonight to get some more frozen foods. Also, I have decided on their names!! Crash and Eddie, like the possums from ice age.

Crash is the more excitable one and Eddie is the shyer one.

Changed their tank a little. Also just wanted to show how they are starting to gain a little weight. The picture doesn’t show too well but their legs and belly look much thicker to me. And they are getting the two big humps on their backs

Hi, I have had ADFs. Really fun to have, but they do not last long. We had two ADFs, but both died around a month. Ours had a hard time keeping up with the filter, and did not eat very much. It did not react well with our Betta....

Hope this helps,

Christian

Your frogs aren't confusing anything for being food. They are opportunistic predators and it just happens the bettas were just too big.

Hi! Thank you for your concerns. I've had my frogs for a couple weeks now and fortunately, for now, they are doing wonderfully. They are eating a ton, gaining weight, singing, and interacting with all of their tank mates nicely. The only time they fought with my betta was when they first went in. My betta flared and got too close, and then the ADF showed him who is boss (that was also when they were desperate for food and were snapping at everything, including the plants). Now they all swim around peacefully and even follow each other around. My filter is a DIY sponge filter designed specifically for my betta, meaning hardly any flow, so they have no issue swimming around and do it all the time.

I appreciate the concerns! I'll for sure keep them in mind. As of right now they are lovely additions to the tank and I hope they have a luckier fate than yours did, as I am quite attached already

They came from a completely bare tank at the pet store and most likely a bare tank when they were raised. I don't think they even understood the concept of things actually being IN the tank bahaha. They snapped at absolutely everything they saw (plants, snail poop, detritus), including the betta. Not to mention they were poorly fed at the store and starving.

Luckily they have full little bellies now! I haven't seen them snap at Reggie since, hopefully it stays that way.

Thank you for your reply!
