So I've been wanting to get a heater for my fluval spec 5. The temp is sitting around 70-72 right now. Not terrible but not great. Let's say my tank is at 70 and I want to get it up to 78. I've seen it recommended to slowly up the temp over time. I have a preset 50w that is from a kit that I haven't used laying around. Can I in theory just pull my betta then float him? How would it be different from if he just came from a store that was cooler to a toasty tank?

I wouldn't use preset heaters. Get yourself a 50w aqueon heater for 12 bucks and it will be worth it.

IMO it's no different than if you got a betta at Petsmart or Petco and added it to your tank. Just temp acclimate it for an hour or two, then plop it in the tank and you should be fine.

Aqueon 50w heaters are $44 Canadian at petsmart. Seems like everything there is over price. Even with exchange it would be less than 20. Maybe it' a different model?
