Add Freeze Dried Blackworms to fish diet?

Gamer

I'm interested in adding this to my fishies diet and I have noticed a few here use it as a staple for discus fish. Would this be a good staple for my fish, I have mostly angels, tetras and bettas. Also freeze dried or frozen? I see kensfish whom I order food from all the time has both of them.

should work; the only thing is that freeze dried black worms are quite on the expensive side.

Oh yes I've noticed. I'll start with purchasing 1 oz see how they like it. If anything I'm assuming I can feed it as a treat to them as opposed to a daily staple food.

As with any freezedried food, be sure to rehydrate it prior to feeding. Otherwise, it can expand in the stomach of the fish.

Noted and thank you!

Ordered!!! I'm SO excited, I cannot even sit still! I feel like jumping up and down, doing cartwheels and backflips all over the place!

Is it normal to get that thrilled about fish food orders and fish orders in general???

I'm drowning in a pool of anticipation everyone!

Just thought I'd mention that, nutritionally speaking, the same item in frozen form is a lot better for your fish.

Good afternoon,

I order all of my Freeze Dried (FD) foods from Ken's. Mainly the FD Earthworms, Krill Superba, Red Shrimp. The fish simply go nuts for it. Too, I use the Garlic Guard and Vita Chem on these foods. These are treats I feed every two or three days.

Ken's foods always look so good in the package. Too, sometimes they send a little something extra but not always. Samples of other foods when it does happen.

I use them A LOT. Mine come from Al at He is the only one I trust to be honest, there's only 1 other supplier for them and that's Dan in Cali, never used him so I can't say anything bad......I just like Al and loyal to him.

Frozen is no better for your fish then freeze dried. The only difference is amount of water in the food. And by weight, you are going to get more from freeze dried then frozen because of the water. IMO Freeze dried is better because even though these worms are grown clean, the freeze drying process kills pretty much everything possible....while freezing will take out most, but possibly not all things.

I feed mine straight from the pack, sometimes rehydrate it sometimes don't. They never had had a problem, and I also use other foods. If you are worried, or maybe for smaller fish....rehydrate it.

By the way, I've tasted them......I don't advise doing it....they are pretty gross LOL.

Slug I will order from that source next time, this time I went with Kensfish.com but looks good there especially given you trust him.

I didn't just order 1 oz. FDBW's.

1/2 lb Kens Premium Tropical Sticks
1/2 lb Kens Premium Super Color Crumbles #2
1/2 lb Kens Premium Vitamin Booster Flake
1/2 lb Kens Beefheart Flake
1/4 lb Freeze Dried Earthworms

Hence why I've been giddy!

I can vouch for Al's FDBW's as well, that is what I am feeding mine. the love it, and Al is super to work with.
I received a sample of Dan's in California, very good as well, may give him some business too.
I also ordered my other flakes from Ken's, the Beefheart, Shrimp, Booster and Tropical.
my Discus love it all, they are slower at the flakes but its a frenzy when I drop the FDBW's.

Matt, was it for dinner or just a snack, haha

Just for note, Al is the owner of Simplydiscus and he imports his worms from Australia (the original source for FDBW). Dan farms his in California, and to my knowledge...that's where Ken gets them from (I could be wrong). Like I said, Ken/Dan are probably good sources, I've just always used Al.

interesting point, I will have to keep that in mind. Yes, Ken does get his from Dan. I thought you had a video of that.

Got em'!!!!!!!!!!

You get a good 1 oz block. The fish absolutely tear into it.

I got my other food too, Ken didn't include a sample this time, although he threw one in my last order but that is fine. He doesn't do it every time nor is he obligated to.

Overall I am happy because my fish are happy!

I hope this won't count as posting back to back, I wanted to add that the blackworms really are a hit with all my tanks and fish. Easy to break up, they appreciate them soaked in Garlic Guard.

The earthworms, well, the frogs loved them. I cut them up very tiny pieces, they fought over them. I would say, half my fish enjoyed them. At least but not as many or as much as the BW's.

The betta pellets all 7 of my bettas don't seem too keen on as much as they are live foods. Or flakes even for that matter.

Tropical sticks, probably should have gone with crumbles as most my current fish are not big guys, except my angels and bosemani's to an extent but I have to presoak them longer to where they'll break up. They most definitely cannot swallow them whole.

Pleco's could not appreciate the wafers enough! They hang onto those for dear life not letting the other fish nibble.

Kens foods are fantastic though, and he's easy to deal with overall.

Just gotta see if my bettas give the betta pellets a shot later, and next time flakes/crumbles for the tropical food and not sticks unless I have silver dollars or discus by then.

I also use Al's Blackworms for my fish- Discus and otherwise. Honestly, I don't see how frozen would be better.
It's the only food other than a super premium food I also get on Simply Discus that my babies will eat. They grow fast and healthy on Blackworms and I'm with Slug- I only trust Al with blackworms because of disease and such. I have never tried Ken's but I think Dan from CalI supplies them to Ken's.
Not positive but 99% sure.

All fish love them and they are super nutritious for them. They are pretty small- I don't really rehydrate for bigger fish- for the fry I do.

My opinion is with Slug as far as nutrition. Yes they are expensive but worth it.
