Add A Heater To A Tank With Fish

I know I messed up but I’m trying to fix my mistake.
My friends all went and got Betta fish and got me one knowing I have a tank with 2 snails. The only issue is I don’t have a heater. I have since bought a heater but I can’t figure out how to add it to my tank with a live Betta fish, a black mystery snail and a zebra snail.
If anyone can help that would be awesome. Thanks!

Usually it just suctions on the inside of the aquarium and you plug it in. There isn't much to it. It'll slowly warm the water, so it won't hurt your snails or Betta.

Ok thank you so much! I was worried about my snails turning into escargot! Glad that won’t happen. I have a 100w Aqueon submersible heater any advice on what temp to keep my tank at? It’s a 20 gallon. Thanks!

You're welcome lol. Bettas usually like their tanks between 78 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit, I don't know that in Celsius. Is it adjustable? The heater on my 5 gallon isn't but keep my Betta comfy at 78. My other two are adjustable.

After a quick google search I'd recommend setting the temp at 78, if it is adjustable. Nerites don't like temps over 80.

FaithsHidddenAquarium - so where do you live? What is the ambient temperature in your room where the tank is located?
Like Bry said, set the temp between 78-82F and the heater will maintain the desired temperature.

Good luck!

I live in the willamette valley of Oregon and we don’t have air conditioning so the temp in my room during summer is about 70-75 and during winter 60-65.

Along with the heater you need at least one dependable thermometer. You can't depend on the heater dial to be accurate. Every one I have had through the years had to be calibrated to my tanks.

I put the heater in the tank and turn it up until the light comes on and then turn it up just a tiny bit more. When it goes off I check the water temp. If it isn't warm enough I turn it up a tiny bit more. I continue doing this until the tank water is where it needs to be. It takes a bit of time to do this but once done it should not have to be done again. I keep a very close eye on the water temp for a few days to make sure the heater is holding the correct temp. I actually keep two thermometers in my tank at all times and check them daily to be sure all is well.

I have never used a fully submersible heater so making adjustments is easy since the dial isn't under water. Well the one I have on my largest tank says it is fully submersible but I don't put the dial under water. I figure that is just one more thing that can go wrong with them so try to avoid it. I do not trust electric cords in water.

So you will need a heater to stabilize the temperature. Two things:
  1. the heater should have a mark on it near the top indicating the minimum water level. Just ensure that the water levels do not fall below this level to avoid damage to the heater.
  2. Set the temperature on the thermostat at the top of the heater say 78. Plug the heater into the mains only after you have installed the heater in the tank with the rubber suckers provided with the heater - best location is around the rear of the tank hear your filter i.e. near the place that there is water movement.
