Acclimating Snails?

Do I need to worry about acclimating snails when moving them from one tank to another? The parameters are roughly the same, but the temperature difference is about 6 degrees. I was just going to reach in and plop them in the other tank, but I figured I should probably ask first because I don't want to kill the lil guys.

 

For me, it depends on the snail. When I moved my nerite, I definitely acclimated him. When I move pond snails I don't, because they're dinner anyways If you're wanting to keep them, and especially with a six degree temperature difference, I would acclimate them.

 

I don't know if temp makes a difference or not, but what could it hurt to acclimate them? I would probably do it because 6 degrees seems like a lot.

 

They are MTS. I'm not super concerned about them, but I also don't want to kill them and have to fish them out later.

 

I would just get a ziploc bag and fill it a little bit with water, then toss them in the bag. Clothespin the bag to the side of the tank, go do other stuff for a half hour or so, then dump them in. Sort of like...half-acclimating them. Give them at least a fighting chance. I've moved pond snails and simply tossed them in (sometime with a drop of 5 degrees or so) and not had any problems, but better safe than sorry!

 

I like that as a middle-ground idea. It seemed silly to set up a whole drip acclimation thing for snails.

 

When I brought home some MTS, I just plopped them straight in. No problems. Of yourse, your milage may vary.

 

I acclimate snails the same way I acclimate fish. Let the bag float and match tank temperature. Then I add a little water from the tank with a former turkey baster. Wait about 15-20 mins more, repeat x3. For mystery snails and fish I repeat this about 3 or 4 times. Other snails, like nerites and assasins, I may just do one or two after floating, but for pond snails I just toss into the holding tank, whether its temp is the same or not, (unless its really drastic - I'm not heartless lol) since they will be bagged and dropped at the lfs anyway.
