Acclimating fish to higher ph

HI everyone! Okay, I have been using a swallow well for my fish and the ph in my 30 gal is 6.4. I am fixing to start using my new deep well and the ph coming from it is 7.8-8.0. I put water in a bucket with an air stone and let it bubble for 2 days. I want to know about how much to do on my wc to slowly get them use to this higher ph. Should I just do this weekly until they have the full amount of the new water? Or could I even do it like every other day or so? I just don't want to give them ph shock. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!! Hope all are having a good weekend.

Good evening,

I would like to suggest that you continue to do your water changes as you normally do them. Eventually the pH will increase since the pH of the new water is higher. The more frequent you do the water changes, the quicker the pH will remain at a higher level.

Add the new water slowly and everything should be fine.

Thanks Ken! The reason I asked cause I have been doing 30-50% a week. I do know that would be too much, right? What do you think about 10%? Would that be too much? I just want to be careful.

I would just start doing the water changes more frequently for about a week or so and you should be all set.

Good morning,

As long as new water is added slowly, has the same temperature as the tank water, you can do up to a 100% water change if necessary. I think JaySee does 80% on his tanks with every water change. For my 33g long tank I change 50% with every water change.

Slug, one of our Discus keepers does 100% water changes. He shared a video with us recently showing it and his fish are fine.

If you feel better doing smaller water changes, that's fine too. The key is adding the new water slowly if there is a big difference in pH between the tank and the tap.

With such a difference in pH, I would start with 10% daily changes. Once the tank is within 0.4 degrees pH of the well water, then switch to your normal weekly water changes.

If you'd rather get it over and done with, you could set up a drip line and acclimate them to the new well water in a day.

Good luck with adjusting your fish to the new water source.

also, if you add some crushed coral to the tank, it will help rise the ph in the tank slowly so you won't have a shock for the fish...

+1... Id also rather bring the tank water up to close the pH gap rather than the maintenance and work involved with numerous WC's

You can always test how much a 10% water change will affect your PH before hand. Just take 9 parts tank water and mix it with 1 part well water, wait a few hours then test the PH.
