AC70 issues

Hey all,

I have a pretty noisy AC70.

The motor runs fine, just like new.. I replaced the impeller shaft because the original one looked a little bent.

The impeller seems to be free of dirt/gunk/anything else..

But I'm getting a real gritty grinding noise from it..

Do yah think I should replace the impeller first before the motor? I'm no expert but I don't see how the motor could be the cause..?

Thanks!

You could try replacing the impeller. If the shaft was bent ... it could have caused some friction wear to the impeller.

Also, take a Q-Tip and use a conditioner like NovAqua+, Stress Coat, ect... and lightly coat the shaft, impeller housing, impeller magnet, etc... with the conditioner. This acts as a lubricant.

While you obviously don't want a large amount of gunk build up in the impeller areas ... avoid 'over cleaning' those areas as allowing some 'slime' to build up can be beneficial for the parts to run with less friction and often less noise.

The AC's lid can sometimes magnify the noise. So if it's driving you crazy ... you can always remove the lid for the time being. Then install the new impeller, coat the parts with the conditioner, and try it with the lid after that.

Best of luck.

Hello Bruiser,

You can also try adding some Nova Aqua or your chemical of choice that adds body slime to fish into the well area of the impeller. You can also coat the impeller with it before you insert it into the well. It has worked for me in the past when I had those same issues. (assuming nothing is bent)

Hey thanks for the tips guys.. Tried it out, no such luck.. Looks like I`m going to have to spend some money.. Could this be an issue with the motor itself, or not very likely? I don't want to buy a motor and an impeller if I don't have to..

If the shaft was bent ... it could have contributed to some slight impeller damage/uneven wear.

Prehaps try a new impeller 1st. Then re-try coating everything with the conditioner.

How about a new one for only $20?

is that the same aqua clear power filter 70 though? if you search big al's, it'll show both the one in your link and the aqua clear version as two different links. that one may be some kind of a copycat.

Yeah, it's made by the same company that makes it for Aquaclear.

Hmmm, good question.. It looks exactly the same, But the AC lids are stamped with the name, and the user manuals have way more on the cover..

Either way, I'm all fixed up now, got a new motor and impeller from a local guy who was lookin for some gravel.. Good trade on my part..lol

if its a grinding noise, most def the motor or the bearings.
purchase new of any of these. no need to waste time and life trying to fix it, unless there's a piece of fish food caught within.
