Out of the three media choices what is the best combination for an AC HOB filter?

As much foam and biomedia that will fit in it...2 foam and 1 Biomax on top.

I ran one foam and 2+ bags of biomax, when I used them.

I prefer to have more biological media than mechanical, and one sponge kept my tanks clear. In my canisters I only have one tray of sponge - the rest is ceramic.

    That makes sense.

But, the second sponge will act as biomedia as well, so it's not exactly a straight this or that. I just prefer biomax over sponge for biomedia, because it has an enormous amount of surface area by volume, compared to sponge.

I set mine up from bottom to top, sponge, sometimes carbon pad, filter floss and 2 bags of biomax up top.

I do from bottom to top, sponge, then biomax and last, carbon. Since the carbon is the only thing I change at 6 weeks, I put it on top so its the easiest to remove. The sponge and biomax only get rinsed once a month.

Well, all in all...It all depends on sourcewater/tapwater and tank setup. LOL/Truth
