Hello Fellow Fishlorians!

Why are all fish said as ______ fish?

Examples:
Betta fish
Tuna fish
Koi fish

Why only fish though?

If it’s being done for fish, we should have things like:
Dog mammal
Gecko reptile
Wombat marsupial

I never say something fish, A betta is just a betta.
And to be honest I don't think ive ever heard any one say it either except if they have both koi coloured fish like angels and koi fish too, to differentiate between them.

Its more common with the other aninals you mentioned then with fish.
Hairy nosed wombat and the bare nosed wombat.
Its the same with gekkos if you look at a list of their names half will end in gekko.
Dogs are the same again you have cattle dog, sheep dog, wolf dog, etc.

Look up the late George Carlin. He frequently asked about things like this. For example, why is it called a hot water heater? Why would you need to heat water that is already hot?

Lol WHYYYYY... This is so frustrating now. I'm guilty of it because none of my friends have fish as if I just say bristlenose pleco or platy they have no idea what I'm talking about...

I always just call it an ATM, I've never heard ATM machine

I know someone who calls them ATMs machines. And I always yell: YOUR SAYING AUTOMATIC TELLER MACHINE MACHINE. they never stop so I suppose me yelling does nothing

UMB Bank - the B in UMB stands for Bank, but they still call themselves UMB Bank.

Although if you were talking, one could think you are saying "pin" and not "pen" so ink would clarify. But I think most people would be able to use context clues to figure out the right thing lol

Maybe a little weird but has anyone ever seen the episode of SpongeBob with the campfire song. I used to watch that show as a kid and I didn't understand till I was older that they were singing: c-a-m-p-f-i-r-e-s-o-n-g song. I laughed so hard and this reminded me of it.

Had an existential crisis the other day about the use of "fish" versus "fishes".
I remember on a school field trip ages ago, the Georgia Aquarium said to use "fish" when referring to a single fish, or several of a single fish species, but to use "fishes" when referring to fish of different species. I always thought that was kinda dumb though, so I just say "fish" for everything.

Well, my Kipp is certainly not a dog. He’s my last furbaby. And yes he’s spoiled. And since he’s over 15 now, he gets whatever his little heart desires. But he’s not a dog.

Well, WE see them as not dogs ... but that's now how they see themselves.... believe me ... they don't want to be human! They have way more fun as dogs.

Worse: Amica Mutual Insurance Company. "Amica" originally stood for Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America. So it's Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America Mutual Insurance Company.
