hI there everyone I am worried about my oscar. well the problem is that he gets spook sometimes and I do not know what could be the problem. I assume thelight emitting from the tv because I watch netflix late at night. sometime when I get done and settle for bed he goes crazy and splashes and thrashing about in his tank and I'm worried that he will hurt himself. he has been doing this for awhile but not frequently like rarly he does. help? everyting as far as readings for ammo, nitri, and nitra are good

What size is your tank? What are your water readings?

It's a 55, according to his aquarium info. With 0,0,10 readings.

How old is the Oscar? I wonder if he has perhaps outgrown his tank. Are you able to upgrade any time soon?

How long have you had him?

Really a 55 gallon is too small of a tank for an Oscar - at least 75 gallons minimum for one. But, this is probably and most likely not the reason though of why he is scared.

One thing I used to do is teach them to associate you with food. Each time you walk up to the tank drop in a couple of pellets. Eventually they get the idea that you are the source of food

How big is your fish? I've found that the Oscars I've had also went through this stage around the 3-6" 'puberty' period. And it very rarely happened after that. There could be other contributing factors like water parameters out of whack, or something as simple as not liking a decoration. Also, mine seemed to have these episodes more often in the nighttime when the lights were all off. Oscars are easily spooked, and are pretty clumsy as well. Just hope that one of these 'freak out' moments doesn't injure him too badly and treat accordingly if it does.

Are the tank lights on up til you go to bed? What I do after shutting all the other room lights down is turn one off, wait a few seconds, then turn the other off when I go to bed.
