A note about Fishlore's rules

The above link is to the rules that everybody has agreed to follow when joining the forum. They're relatively simple, most of them are common sense, and there aren't terribly many of them. For the most part, folks around here are excellent about following them, making the mods' job pretty easy most of the time.

However, we have noticed that there has been a recent upswing of individuals who are trying to bypass the rules. In some cases, this has been pretty blatant, such as when people post a link to a video that shows animal cruelty and mark it with warning that it's graphic. In other cases, it's more subtle, such as people trying to find ways to advertise a website or maybe sell products on the forum before hitting fifty posts.

In most cases, the central idea seems to be that people think it's okay as long as they don't break the letter of the rules.
This is not the U.S. legal system and neither Mike nor the mods care about technicalities. That's the entire reason for rule #10, which leaves the rules open to moderator interpretation.

Rather than trying to find ways to bypass the rules (which will only make other members, not to mention the mods, cranky with you), if there's something that you wonder whether or not you would be allowed to do, contact Mike or one of the mods and verify ahead of time. We're all happy to answer such questions.

Thank you for working with us to keep Fishlore a thriving, pleasant community for everyone.

Today I linked to an information page on a certain fish from another fish site (not a forum) before remembering the no competitors rule. The linking was to explain a certain fish, but I edited it out and just summarized it in my post. Is this kind of linking ok, or should we summarize instead?

Piloswine - you can link to other fish sites if the info adds to the discussion. See rule #5. It's mainly so that webmasters at other websites don't spam the forum with links back to their sites. If it adds to the discussion taking place and it's not inappropriate, by all means post the link.

Rule #5. Outbound links that add to the discussion or help in some way are allowed. However, this does not mean that webmasters for other sites can use this forum to create links to their sites solely for the purpose of creating links. FishLore.com has a reciprocal links page setup just for this purpose. If you're interested in adding your link to FishLore.com, please visit - Also, don't post links to sites and videos (like youtube) showing animal cruelty. Report these videos/sites to the website owner or proper authorities.

Apparently you have some school yard bullies on this site. I am blocking all messages to me and my email address which is listed on my personal information on this site. If anyone wants to take exception to a very harmless something or other I said on a subject--they will have to do it in the public domain. If it is something that happens often--I will find a more friendly site. I joined to learn all I can about fish--not to have some person taking their frustrations out on another person for no good reason at all.

I received an email that I had a message that I don't believe was appropriate at all--therefore, hopefully I have blocked any such further messages. Seems a shame to me that something so innocent as trying to take care of fish has bullies that hang around on the site for whatever their reason.

Geri, if you would like to contact any of the moderators to discuss any problems, please do.
Also use the report button so that we can handle anything that comes up that is inappropriate or you find offensive.

You can also block individual members if you didn't want to block everyone.

FishLore is a family friendly site and we strive to keep it that way.

Wow- bullied on FL- mods should take a look at that. You shouldn't feel that way here Geri...other places perhaps but not here.

Thanks for the post- Sir.

I would like to come flat out and say that I did create a post that violated these rules without thinking before I typed. I would like to say that I am sorry and if anyone was truely offended by it, it was not intended, what was intended was to try to show the unjust situations of most fish and find a way to do something about it. Once again, I'm very sorry if I offended anyone, it was not ment that way and I hope that I am never that blatently stupid again. I agree, this is a family freindly site and I intend to do my part to keep it that way as I am still considered a minor and would fit in to the category of the younger members that take advantage of this site's wonderful enviroment and if there is anything fishy (haha, had to add a little humer into a serious post, just my personality) going on, it should be reported and discussed. I wish fishlore to stay a reputable gathering ground for people of all genders, ages, and races to meet in a freindly and professional enviroment to discuss a common hobby, however lame or crazy our friends think us to be.

yuungstermatt--It wasn't you, I did not come across your post. I try to read posts that pertain to my fish and my circumstances and answer those that I think I have knowledge or experience in. The polls are what I need to stay away from because it seems anyone can say anything they want. I thought they were fun--but not anymore. I hope that by stopping anything that could come to my email or as a private message on this forum will take care of the problem.

I did note that the poll I am talking about had a message on it to stay on subject and to clean up the language from a Moderator--I'm guessing that's when I got the private message. I just don't want it to get worse so have closed off the possibility of further communication.

because it seems anyone can say anything they want.

This is not correct.

Discussing these matters in vague terms in public does not help us make the forum a comfortable place for everyone to be.

There is a report button that members can use to report offensive posts/pm's/profile messages.

Please feel free to contact one of the mods if you would like to discuss this further.

I agree with Lucy and besides I think the moderators are doing a very good job keeping everything in order, making sure that people don't just go around saying whatever they want and helping us all follow the rules
