So yesterday I found my koi female stuck between a sponge filter and the glass. I have no idea how she got herself back there but she was stuck tight. I moved the filter so she could swim free but I could tell she wasn't feeling good. This morning I came downstairs and she was dead :-[

Oh NOOOOO!!! I am so sorry to hear that!! :-;hug2

That must be heartbreaking. I know that feeling all to well. Was this one of the parents of your current babies?

Yes it was the female of my koi pair. I still can't figure out how she got stuck. It's just a sponge filter the water current couldn't have been that much.

Not sure now what to do with the male. I had my 90 divided with a pair on each side. I don't want to leave it divided with the lone male by himself but I know the 3 won't get along

Any chance the male was picking on her and she felt a need to hide? And then got stuck as a result? I have had breeding pairs get pretty nasty to each other.

I guess it's possible but I've never seen any aggression between them

On a happier note I may go buy some of these this weekend

Yeah they look amazing. They're more expensive than what I'd like to pay but fish stores around me don't have any angelfish other than the generic marbles

Ya, my LFS would charge 2-3x as much for those than they would for other Koi. They call the full coverage Koi angels "Super red Koi angels" and they charge triple what they would for regular koi angels.

I am so curious to see if any of my koi babies end up with that much coverage!! (even though their parents don't have that much coverage)

At least yours has them available haha. The selection of angelfish around me is basically what you find at the chain stores. But hopefully that will make it easier to sell the babies locally

On my way home with new fish. I'll post pics once they're safely in there new home.

$25 apiece. They're about 10 months old. He also had some amazing Pinoy and Philippine blue that really tempted me

And here they are!

Thanks

Breeding tubes are down on both the new koi this morning

Finally got the fry tank moved onto a table where it's much easier to care for them. I had it on an old end table but it was such a pain to bend over all the time. Much more organized now too

I have a problem. 55 gallon coming soon

Today is water testing on the 55 I got last night. This tank is going to stay bare bottom. Maybe some potted plants in the future. I'm going to put a divider in it and put a pair of angels on each side. This way they get their own space and I can use my 90 for a grow out tank.

Look at you go!! LOL Congrats on another tank!!!

If I were you, I'd keep the adults in the 90 and use the 55 for a grow out. But that's just me

I thought about that but I hate how my 90 looks divided and they all fight when put together

Quick update on the koi babies

Built a stand for the 55 tonight.

First pic is the guts of the stand. This would have worked but the second pic shows what I added just for piece of mind. Hope to have angels in the 55 by this weekend!!

It looks clear to me, but try taking you videos in landscape rather than portrait (sideways phone versus upright) it improve viewing area and looks closer than vertical videos.

The 5 gallon the fry are in is getting pretty crowded so I'm slowly moving them over into temporary divided section in my 55

Awesome journey. Where do you get your tank dividers from?

I made them from acrylic. They were really easy to make

Just cut to size of tank (inside dimensions) and drill holes?
Is there a special drilling process for acrylic?
How do you secure them in tank? Just making sure it's a snug fit?
This concept could open up a whole new world to me, lol. I am hoping to start angelfish breeding soon as well. I have some young ones I am waiting to see if any pair off.

Yeah I used a circular saw to cut them to size then just drilled them. The first one I did I didn't have any problems drilling but the second one I got in a hurry and messed up a few holes but it's just a temporary divider. On the one in the middle of the tank I measured inside of tank and made it fit snug. On the one that's going to be going in and out a lot I made it loose and then put vinyl hose on both sides to make it easy to take out and put in.

My new pair layed eggs today. Don't have a spot to move them so for now they will stay with the parents

Got the babies moved to a section on the 55 and starting to feed them flakes once a day and bbs twice instead of 4 times

  • #76
How old are the ones in the video? Have the high coverage babies hatched yet?

tfreema
  • #77
I see the video loaded 4 times, lol. Same thing happened to me with a picture the other day and when it finally loaded I had 5 posts of the same thing and could not delete any of them.
Coradee came in and deleted them that night though so a moderator will likely be in at some point to tidy it up.
Evidently still working out some bugs with the new platform.

@bizaliz when do you switch your babies to 100% flakes. I've cut back on bbs and I'd say half of their food is flakes now but how do I know when they're ready to make the switch

This past week I've been having problems. I'm loosing about 3 babies a day and can't figure out why. They're all eating fine and I'm doing water changes every day. None look sick they just keep dying.
