Thanks I have no idea.

what kinds do you have?

If I can’t find one at the 5 nearest locations to me I may buy, I’m hoping for a rescue though.
I have Fancy Bears (Syrians). I have a local guinea pig rescue, but I don’t have one with hamsters. Mine are all from the pet store, but they’re from pet stores I trust.

PetSmart had what they called a Skinny Pig. It was a Guinea Pig with no hair except a tuft on the top of it's nose. Has anyone seen those before? It was strange looking but cute in a way.

Thank you! I also have a black female with white feet and a tan male. They’re all incredibly sweet. I can’t wait to see what you find!

Wow!! Ok maybe I should have bought it then.. I didn't know real much about them so I didn't feel like I should make an impulse buy.. did some research when I got home and decided I don't want one after all!!! PS.. my husband thinks they are very ugly that may have influenced my decision!!

Yep. They get a lot more health issues then the regular ones.

I just set up the *VERY* temporary cage, equipped with water bottle and all. I wrapped my playpen around it so there’s no chance of escape. When I go to get them, I just need a 8 inch wheel (if the hamster is going to be stuck in there for a few days, I’m getting a wheel), food (Amazon was 10 bucks. Really?), and a few chews, like whimzees. I also hope to get my 5.5 gallon tank so I can get that project underway.

Just came back! No stores near me had any for adoption so I bought this one.
She’s a female Syrian long haired hamster. I may not decide to name her Pepper. She seems timid but sweet.

She’s still awake XD go to sleep little one.

Her name is officially Macaroni, Mac for short.

Her back bends slightly when she’s on her wheel. Will she be ok for the few days that she uses it?

emmysjjshes gorgeous! She’s the same color I wanted (tan and white). I chose my tan male over a tan/white albino in the end though.

Thank you! She’s so sweet and is very curious. She likes her cage, I guess, but it’s short term. I also got some clearance bird toys for her to play with.

Edit: I forgot to add, she actually has red eyes. She’s not fully albino but slightly. I’m not bothered by it but I was worried my mom might be, but she was overtaken by cuteness

My male ended up coming from a new Petsmart here. They had had him since the store opened, so he was there for a few months. He had actually been beat up by another male that got to him. He’s great though.

Thank you so much!!!

She’s a bit chunkers so I’m putting her on a ‘diet’. It’s probably because of that wire wheel, it must’ve hurt to use it, so she didn’t.

She seems a little lethargic, for lack of a better word. She’s falling asleep on her wheel, and when my dog came into the room, she moved in like, slow motion, and as soon as she left, she was fine again.

Is she just stressed from the new environment and I’m having new parent syndrome or is something seriously wrong?

‘I slep. Right her’

How long is she going to be using that wheel? If it’s only a few days then it won’t do any permanent damage. Longer and you might have problems.

No there’s nothing wrong, her reaction to the smell of a predator is perfectly normal. You might not want to let your dog into the room for a good few days though until she settles down, remember some take longer than others. I leave mine at least four days before interacting with them at all unless THEY show signs of wanting to interact with me.

What substrate are you using?

Also you don’t have to put her on a diet, she’s not that big. Females are a lot larger then males, plus the fur will make her look bigger. Do you have a scales to weigh her?

An ideal weight for an adult female (which she looks to be but photos are deceiving) is: average weight for a Syrian hamster is 162.3g.
However, there is a massive range of weights. The biggest hamster weighed 310g and the smallest weighed just 75g.

Don’t put to much on weight because Syrian vary in size MASSIVELY. I had a long haired girl who was touching 296g but my other Syrian girl was only 120 gallon all her life. As long as she’s healthy and active, she’s good.

Just until the detolf comes, her Carolina Storm Wheel (11 inch) doesn’t fit in the temporary cage.

Ok, I’ll keep keep her out of the room. The problem is, she’s scratching at my door. She’s not trying to attack her, she’s just watching her. Maybe if I kept her at the other side of the room?

Kaytee Clean and Cozy, White. When the cage comes I’m mixing in CareFresh.

I haven’t heard or seen her drink at all. Should I be worried? Do a tent test?

I was just joking about the diet XP I am avoiding fatty foods though.
I don’t have a gram scale at the moment, unfortunately.
Thank you, very useful. When I purchase a scale, I’ll find this
Now that she has access to a painless wheel, I’m sure she’ll get more in shape.
She’s doesn’t seem like a treat girl so far. I offered her broccoli, Yogies Cheese Drops, strawberry, and Pure Bites Chicken. She’s eaten it, but only when it’s in her bowl.

Ok good.

I personally would not. After a few weeks then yes IF the hamster is ok with the dog being there and shows no signs of distress.

Excellent choice on the Kaytee.

No. Syrians don’t actually drink that much because they’re naturally from a climate that’s dry.

You need to stop bothering her for at least four-five days if she’s that nervous. Please let her settle.

I’ve had hamsters literally since I was about four years old, I’ve had over 20 in my life, I know what I’m talking about. I’m not trying to be arrogant but you’re going to do a lot of damage if you push her to much before she’s ready.

No, I wasn’t touching her, I placed them around her cage before I put her in. She won’t be handled for a few more days.

That’s good.

Some take a bit longer to come around than others.

Just heard from IKEA that my package is coming this Saturday. Does anyone know why I might have to sign for 6o pounds of glass to be shipped to my house? Just kidding lol.

A few things.

1. She seems so much more relaxed and friendly now. She comes to me when I walk in.

2. I tried a bonding session today (just because she looked so eager to come out) and took a treat from my hand, good progress. Anyone have any taming tricks?

3. I saw her take a drink, which is good because I was getting worried.

4. She is using the bathroom normally (I had to gently move her nest because of the reason below).

5. The best of all, I managed to install her 11 inch bucket wheel in there. It's really quiet, I highly recommend it. No more bent back for her, and peace and quiet for me

She's making a lot of progress with taming and is a lot more friendly. She takes treats from my hand, and gives me sweet painless nips (just to test). She'll be a great cuddle buddy

I am SO ANNOYED.

The detolf came last night, and I just tried to assemble it today. The piece that connects the two glass walls is completely warped and will not work. We are out of duct tape so we're getting it in the morning. I just asked for a refund, I'm never ordering from IKEA again.
