A heads up about the Apple iPad

Some of you may have noticed a recent surge in spam about Apple products (and thank you to all of you who have pointed those posts out so quickly... it certainly makes the job of removing them easier).

Anyway, it turns out there is a reason behind this. Online con artists are using the sudden interest in the iPad to scam people.

This article has more info.

Wow, that's pretty creepy. We like to think that searching on the internet for something normal is safe.

Thanks for the heads up, SDS.

I hear that. Haha

But in all seriousness, it's a very gimped product and at that cost, you could get a laptop/netbook that does sooooo much more and you won't have Apple controlling what you can do.

Were those the weird ads made by that person who just signed up and started reeling of Apple Products?

lol. Apple controls what you can do? Now I'm curious! I <3 my macbook, but I'd love to know if I were somehow limited.

I mean in regards to like the iphone were they can disable anything on the phone, including apps that you bought. Unless you had a jail broke phone.

Ahh, kind of like the "1984" recall on the Kindle, eh? lol Is the iPad something you'd download apps on? I guess I better head to google...

EDIT: Ohhh, I see! I guess they couldn't let Amazon take the whole market. hahaha (I still can't help but love Apple... I've never had a laptop last so long! ;D)

I have to admit I am interested in one...I was getting ready to head out in a week or so to buy me an ipod touch that I have wanted forever...now I am thinking about just waiting for one of the ipads. I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and bought a TINY notebook a few months ago..it is only about 2 1/2 pounds but it is still too heavy for me to hold very long and it is hard for me to use a mouse sometimes..the touch screen would be great! I dunno...I will have to keep watch and see I guess...

That's a great idea! My mom has rheumatoid arthritis as well, so I understand where you're coming from - I'll have to suggest one to her. And I hope you're feeling well today!

So do I! I'd love a Mac Pro, but I'll have to hit the jackpot first. lol

I would like mac's if I could get a decent computer for a decent amount of money. Instead they charge an outrageous amount of money and make the thing difficult to upgrade. I'll stick with my pc's. I can buy them cheap and upgrade cheap. Can't beat that.

Folks, there's a PC vs Mac thread around here. Please use that if you want to debate the finer points of the two. This thread is specifically a warning about scammers trying to deprive you of your money by utilizing the recent interest in the iPad.

Whoops, sorry for the inadvertent hijacking!

I think that using popular search terms to redirect people to dangerous sites is a fairly common practice. I'd say the best defense is to become familiar with the address bar: if you're at a site that looks like apple.com, but you see that the address bar says apple.xz7.com, you've probably found a suspicious site. Also, pretty much any pop-up is bad news... The ones that supposedly warn you of a problem detected on your machine are the worst! Never download anything you didn't plan on downloading when you logged on - and never download any kind of security software that doesn't have a good reputation! So much malware is presented as security software...
