I received my first issue of this newsletter by e-mail today and thought you may be interested in this ridiculous bunch of information.

It is so difficult to think of some people being so cruel to these lovely fish.

Rose, you should sticky this topic AND post it on as many fish websites as possible. If I were not a respectful person and did not value this website and many members on it, I'd be REALLY CURSING these cruel people right now (the people who dye fish). I really can't express with words how horrible it is to me - I literally had tears in my eyes when I was reading the newsletter. Please everyone, spread the news as far and wide as possible. We cannot let this continue. I don't want to sound vengeful, but I really HOPE the people who torture fish will get exactly what they deserve. Just because fish are smaller than cats or dogs (or other pets) and live in water, does NOT mean they're less important and that they can be tortured. They live and feel as all live creatures on Earth. God ... I can't. Enough. (You've no idea how angry I am right now.)

Yes Isabella I do believe I can imagine, it made me sick to my stomach. Consider it "sticky-ed". I will see if I can get it sent to the other sites tomorrow.

I think this is horrible. I can't believe people would do things like this. > I doubt the people who do this would like it if someone did it to them, so why do it to a fish. ??? > Things like this make me really angry.

I saw some fish in my lfs once, and they were labeled "parrot" fish, and looked similar to these fish but were orange, and they also had some other fish that looked as if they had been dyed. I don't go there any more.

So far I've only seen painted barbs and some other kind of fish (I think painted glass fish) at my LFS (which is NOT good). But I've never seen anything like the fish in the Newsletter provided by Rose. If I saw fish like this at my LFS ... oh boy would the staff come flying out of the store ... or, if not, they'd have a huge argument with me anyway. I didn't yet have the courage to tell them (or rather yell at them) what I think about the painted fish they had and about the way they keep Bettas. But there will come a point where I will be no longer able to stand it. Though actually I saw a MIRACLE there once: they had ONE Betta in a 20 gallon tank with some smaller fish. Wasn't that a "paradise" for the poor fish (compared to what conditions Bettas usually live in)?

I got the same e-mail. At least the person in the story isn't advocating the sale of dyed fish. He was as sick as we are. Unfortunately, as long as people buy dyed fish they will be dyed and sold.

How cruel it is to paint fishes.. To bring an end to these sort of practices, we should propogate this message to all the fish forums/boards. We should make people aware of the kind of treatments, the fishes go through before being displayed in the fish stores.. I would never encourage these kind of things.. just for the sake of money..

...and when the 'unwary buyer' purchases such fish and takes them home, only to have them die after a short time due to the cruelty meted out to them by these fish-dyers, the buyer just goes back to the store to get some more "hybrid, pretty-little-fish"...right ??? > ...disgusting

Sadly by me it seems the tatooed fish don't sell and they no longer seem to sell many dyed fish because they died on them before they could sell all of them or their color would fade. It's really sad, if I had the room I would have taken the dyed fish off there hands because nobody was going to buy them since their color was fading and they looked horrible, I would have asked them if I could have made there life as comfortable as possible as long as they don't buy anymore.

How do you get a deathbydyeing.org thing in your signature?

Butterfly
  • #24
I'm sorry they died but if you had bought them the owners might have ordered more because they were able to sell those. I know it's a vicious circle isn't it?
go tp , choose what you want, right click on it and click on properties and copy the url. Then go to signature in profiles copy the url with the tags in front and back.

O what I meant to say was I'd try and give them a good life because they were just going to die in the store because there dyes had faded away and I would make sure the pet store knew I was buying them to save them from dyeing.

Thanks

Holy Carp!!!!

That is horrific! I have never heard of anything like it before....How awful!

I love ALL animals....cruelty of any kind literally makes me seethe! >

I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing and reading when I looked at the links on this thread.
I have never actually seen a painted fish and I hope to god I never do....I really cannot understand why anyone would want to buy a fish that looks so very wrong! They are not even attractive, just gaudy and awful!

I don't particularly like fish that are engineered to make them have odd shapes, extra tails etc and would never purchase one...but tattooed fish! That is just far too far....completely disgusting!

People should be buying and keeping fish for the naturally beautiful, living, feeling creatures that they are....Are there really people out there who do not realise that a fish like any of those pictured could not possibly be natural??

I'm actually speechless....It's totally sick!

Thing that sucks for us youngsters is that we can't do anything about it really, it's either buy from the dyed fish stores or not keep fish since my parents won't le me buy online and will rarely take me to the fishstore that doesn't sell dyed fish and they have super high prices that I can't pay if I buy only from them which would be once a year, doesn't work.

That article was absolutely appalling to say the least. Why would anyone want to torture any kind of animal like that? :-\ > That makes me really angry and very sad to see those poor fish like that. God gave them their natural beauty and it should remain that way. They are beautiful creatures to look at and watch naturally and to be messed with like that is just plain wrong.

It's for money, the same as why petstores sell multiple common plecos, pirhanas, red tail catfish and other large fish the normal person could not keep, just for money. That's why you can't just say awww poor dyed fish, you have to look at those fish that will get sold to a small tank and have a horrible life being stunted and not being fed the proper food.

Just figured I'd mention it, but PetSmart doesn't sell dyed fish.
