Hi, I'm a beginner fish keeper and have a mystery fish in my tank. My dad went fishing and bought bait minnows, and since it's illegal to release them he has put this one in my tank after a round in the quarantine tank. Does anyone know the specific type of fish this is? IMG_20170801_174737548.jpg

What gives it away as a golden shiner? I'm looking at common bait minnow species and they all look so similar to the minnow pictured that I'm confused.

Let minnow if you figure it out...

Bait minnows are almost always common or golden shiners. Common shiners don't have that dark horizontal line on the flank, they'll have black bloctches if any coloration at all. Golden shiners are the only species that possess a line that dark at that size.

I buy them for largemouth fishing once in a while and I've seen both species sold simply as shiners, but the dark line is tell tale.
