Ok so ive been building this tank stand for a few months now (not consistantly) and today I bought my 75 gallon tank (petco $90). I'm pretty sure the stand will hold once done. I am planning on adding more plywood around the frame and adding cabinet doors and eventually painting.

I used:
2x4's
.5" plywood (forgot what type)
2.5" construction screws

Now questions:
1. What type/size plywood should I get to go around?
2. What should I use for paint? Waterproofing?
3. Overall structure?

I used Birch 1/2" on mine from Home Depot. You can either stain/poly or paint this plywood, it is smooth and clear. That carpet looks exactly like mine but here is a tip get yourself one of the plastic boot trays to protect the carpet from spills and drips while you are doing maintenance.

I will look into a boot tray. I made the bottom open up so I can not only stash stuff but also if I get a leak I can get under the stand to clean it up. My last stand I built I learned the hard way.

Yep, I have never learned anything from doing something without a hitch but my mistakes stick in my head.

I want to build my own stand as well..... what are your measurements if you don’t mind me asking?

The dimensions for 75 are 48"X18",but I would make it 49"X 19" .The height could be as high or low as you wish.Depending on where you are going to place the stand it could be as a simple 2"X4" stand as pictured above or made into a cabinet with doors. A power miter saw is a good tool for cutting your 2X4`s accurately and square.

A real steal on the tank! - just paid $237 for a 55gal kit - that's Canada!
  1. 1/2" Plywood is good for the "case" to strengthen your build - birch is pretty - cheaper as "good one side" If you can find it - Spruce 1/2" Good One Side if paint will do - construction grade cheapest. Marine Plywood the most expensive and you'll hand it off to your grandkids!

  2. Spar Varnish or Varithane Outdoor for the Birch, Stain and Clear-coat with Varnish or Deck and Dock Finish the G1S Spruce, and exterior paint for construction grade Spruce (cheapest) block-sand between coats.

  3. You're looking at 625.91 pounds of water + substrate (rocks + wood + probably 50/75lbs gravel) + support equipment (filtration - pumps - heaters) . I'm just sayin', "heavy" .
I'd build for 800lbs to be safe. The particle board shown in your photo has no strength long term, and will warp and absorb water and de-laminate - I'd stick to non-structural, like doors if you must... See this
and just scale it down to suit - better too strong!
