75 gallon - one or two filters?

hI - can I get away with two aquaclear 50 filters instead of one aquaclear 110? I already have a 50 and a bunch of foam, carbon, etc for it, so am thinking why not buy two 50's and i've already got media for them...thoughts? also, I like the aquaclear..I hear it's quieter than the marineland 400 emperor (noisy?)...

 

It doesn't matter how many filters you have, as long as your GPH is 8 to 10x tank gallons. So for a 75, you want to get 600-750 GPH.

 

Might I suggest you getting a canister filter? All mine are extremely quiet,

 

2 aquaclear 50's will give you about a 7x turnover rate, that should be plenty for most fish species. I only have about 6.5 turnover rate on my 110g blood parrot/severum tank and it is pretty heavily stocked. I have never had an issue.

Me too. I really don't see that being enough filtration. It may stir up the water, but not truly filter.

How many water changes do you want to do in a week? I have a canister and an Aquaclear 500 on my 55 gallon and think I need more.

 

hmm..ok thanks for your advice...not sure about the canisters..out of my price range. I would have thought the 110 would be plenty of filtration.

The more filtration the better as long as the fish are not being blown around the tank by the current.

I would suggest keeping the Aqua Clear 110 (500gph)and adding an Aqua Clear 70 (300gph) for a total of
800 gph (gallons per hour).
