75 gallon filter options.

Hi.
I have a seachem tidal on right side of tank and am looking to replace aquaclear 70 on the opposite side.

It's been running for 7 or so years, yet I don't like that it doesn't fit over the lip of the tank.

I would get another tidal yet I don't like that I unplugging it for water changes.
I also think a aquaclear 110 has to much push down on the flow.

Can you guys offer some other hob options that are a good fit ?

Thank you

Why replace the AQ70? I have 2 of them on my 55 gal and they work great. My AQ70 is a tight fit on the rim of the 55 but fits ok. Not sure why you have to unplug the filter for a water change.

The aq 70 doesn't fit right on the rim of the tank.

I unplug the tidal because it has a annoying noise as it goes dry. Most of the filtration happens via the skimmer.

I had trouble fitting the Aqua Clear over the rim of my 55 but i pushed hard and it goes on. I was afraid of cracking the plastic but it made noise but sat down all the way. If your junking the filter anyway try forcing it on. Probably won't work, I can't tell from the pic how close it is, but these are great little filters i hate to see them scrapped.

ac70 gap is too narrow for a 75g tank. i run a pair of Tidal 110 on my 75g, you can reduce the flow if its too strong.

Yes that looks way to narrow to force over the lip. I'm surprised they didn't change the design of the filter to accommodate larger tanks. I like to use two smaller hob's on my tanks rather than one large one. Better water flow, less chance of bacteria failure when cleaning, if one filter dies you still have time to get another.

Just curious why you don't want to unplug you filter when doing water changes. I've never done a water change with my filters running.

I run two Marineland Emperor 400's on both my tanks. They are reasonably quiet & work great.
The Emperor 450's are the most recent update to the 400's.

Because it's something else to do.
I can leave the ac running which is nice, just keeping the water above the intake.

I use canister filters now but I have used Marineland Penguin Bio-Wheels for probably 30 of my 40 years of life and they've never once failed me. I know they're not popular on here but people say downright ridiculous things about them ... "I am not sure if you realize this but a Bio-Wheel filter products Nitrates..." ... I am sorry, and your chosen filter somehow prevents the Nitrate part of the Nitrogen Cycle? I mean really now.

Now their newer, redesigned Emperor Pro filters are fairly reasonable at less than $80 on Amazon right now and every review I've watched on Youtube is pretty phenomenal. I am just saying, these things have always done me right. I went to a canister filter to try to reduce the water noises from the aquarium in my bedroom, because I think it **** off my dog, but the actual filter itself was virtually silent. Just a little splash from the bio-wheel.

skar , i had the same problem on our Marineland 75g aquarium amd Aquaclear 70.

I notched out the plastic lip where i wanted the AC70 to sit.

No issues for over 3 years now.

Regarding having too much flow using an AC110, i have not had that experience.

Our 75g runs an AC70 + AC110 and a canister.

The AC110 does indeed flow a lot of water, comparable to most canisters.

While it flows a lot, it doesn't create a huge current of water around the tank since the water discharge chute is so wide.

Now if that same volume of water was being pushed out the discharge tube of a canister, there would be more current generated to push around in the tank.

I'm thinking of going with a tidal 75.
This aqua clear is pumping water, yet being above the rim tilted back. The filter is not doing as well as it could.

It's also been through some use of about 8 years, so the plastic is likely brittle to withstand remodeling.

I'm just hoping the tidal 75 will fit the rim of the tank.

I am a big fan of Aquaclears .
I believe you can use the impeller from the 70 in a 110 and it would flow like a 70 .
The 110 would fit [ I have had the same problem ] but you could still have full adjustment of flow and more filter space for material ..

My AC110 fits perfectly on the rim of our 75g, though the rim had to be notched out for the AC70 to fit.

I like Coralbandit's suggestion about using the AC70's impeller in the 110.

Update. I attempted to mod the ac 70 to fit the rim of the tank.
However the intake tube was still being pushed forward by the rim.

I ordered the tidal 75 and put it on today.
I'm pretty happy with it !
I removed the valve stopping flow from the intake tube completely on both of the tidals.

Also I now have double the media in for the filtration ! That's always a good thing.
Very quiet and the I enjoy the flow that doesn't push down the water, it moves the current along the top for a ripple.
