7 inches of snow and more to come

Here in my little part of the world we don't normally get much in the way of snow and the temps don't normally get as low as they have been this winter. 7 degrees this morning and is supposed to be -3 tonight. The feel like temps are much lower than that. BRRRRRRRRR. Growing up around here we had winters like this and even colder but haven't seen anything like this for at least 20 years. The last snow we had of any really measurable amount was back in 1990. It didn't stop until it had dumped 16 inches on us. We normally get more ice/freezing rain than actual snow. I think I prefer the snow we are getting now. At least this dry snow doesn't break tree limbs and bring down power lines as bad as wet heavy snow or freezing rain.

The snow started yesterday morning, drifted down most of the day and through the night. Woke up to snow still drifting down this morning. It has just about stopped for now but left behind at least 7 inches. The weather folks tell is we will get more and maybe even MUCH more. YAY!!!!! Enough to make snow ice cream

Grin and bear it! Hope you don’t get more! Do you have a generator? We got around 12” last week in one shot and 6-7” in the next. I’m looking at 3’ drifts in my backyard.

Thankfully yes, we do have a generator. I knew y'all were getting quite a bit of it up in your neck of the woods long before it got down to us.

I've got all the ingredients to make it. I just have to have hubby bring some snow in for it. Thankfully I don't have to go out in it so I can just stay inside and enjoy the beauty of it while it is still fresh and clean.

Around here we’re used to snow and cold (more than 4 feet of snow at the moment and -13F and below the last few days).

What’s really annoying is the rain we’ve been having for many years now during winter. It creates very dangerous driving conditions on the road and more people breaking bones when walking outside. It also causes more water infiltrations in homes, and overflowing rivers. People lose their homes because of it.

The climate is really changing, and not for the best...

The weather folks are predicting we will get more each day through Thursday. My daffodils had already started blooming. Now they are covered in snow. Thankfully something like this doesn't affect them. Once the snow melts they will just continue to bloom.

We too have been getting more rain than we used to. 'Specially Spring rains. Makes it difficult to get the garden ready for planting but I don't want to go there. I would like to keep this thread lighthearted if at all possible.

If we really look we can see the good in all things but that may just be my rose colored glasses fooling me.

Oh my goodness. I can only imagine how hard these conditions are on folks that actually have to get out in it. I feel very fortunate not to have to. That is one thing to look forward to and one of the perks of retirement

I woke this morning to 0 degrees and should get a high of around 8 degrees. Oh and expecting between 6-8 inches of snow. This is normal for my area but we haven't had it this bad for quite some time!

We hit -14F overnight last night, but we're supposed to be rebounding starting today with a high of 25 (yesterday we got to 1F). After the last while, that seems like t-shirt and flip flop weather.

Most of the snow we have had on the ground for 3 weeks. Today is like day 10 in a row of under 20 degrees. But, next week we are supposed to get back in the 30s during the day and 20s at night...which seems like worlds apart from the last week plus

My son is in Little Rock. He said they had snow. I'm jealous, because we usually DO have snow here in NC, and all we've had is cold rain.
By the way, I love visiting Arkansas. It's beautiful, and the people are so friendly.

I suspect I will have to buy fresh elephant ear bulbs this year but thankfully a lot of the perennial bulbs weather temps like that alright. If the perennials you planted aren't bulb plants they may be affected but only time will tell. I know things like daffodils, tulips, crocus, asian/stargazer lilies and hyacinths can handle it. Day lilies and irises have tubers instead of a bulb but they also come through these temps just fine.

Yeah, there are some tuber/bulb plants there, like daylilies, bearded irises, lycoris squamigera (those aren’t supposed to be hardy here, but they survive in our neighbors’ yard), some extra hardy alliums, some peony varieties from the 50’s, daffodils, and asiatic lilies. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of non-tuber/bulb plants. Stuff like salvia nemorosa, lobelia cardinalis, two varieties of nepeta, shasta daisies, ornamental echinacea, and a few others.

We have some shrubs like pjm rhododendrons, quickfire hydrangeas, northern lights azaleas, some forsythias, and some cardinal dogwoods. I wouldn’t be worried about those in other years, but they’re still in their first year.

I’m not worried about the native plants we planted like gaillardia, echinacea purpurea, purple prairie clover, Indian grass, wild columbine, and anise hyssop, though.

Not to worry, your daffodils should be fine. I have seen mine covered in ice with their little blooms frozen to the ground. As soon as the ice melts they stand right back up and act like nothing at all happened.

They should do fine. Mine come up way too early every year, and always re-freeze, but they bloom anyway! They don’t care about ice at all.

That sounds way too hot for February! I can’t handle it when it gets up to the 80’s. 60’s to low 70’s are nice though.

My hubby has lived here since he was about 6 years old (he is 71 now). He said it wasn't unusual at all for all the ponds around here to freeze over deep enough to skate on them. That hasn't happen since 1980 or so. That was actually the last time we had a bitterly cold winter. Occasionally they do freeze a tiny bit around the edges but nothing like it used to be. We have gotten spoiled by these mild winters. I guess we have to have something like what's happening now to help us appreciate the not so cold winters we usually have.

Last winter was super mild for us. I think we had less than 20 days the entire year that temps got below freezing for the highs( none in the 0 degrees or under), so yeah we were a bit spoiled. Now i am officially sick of the next 5 winters already, no matter what they do or don't bring!

We're around 16F here in texas, doesn't help that our power keeps going out  power has been going out since 2am and went our for 5 hours straight at 9am, definitely has kept me on my toes. my fish are fine though (knocking on wood), I wrapped my tanks like a madwoman.
At least the snow is pretty! I went outside earlier and made a pathetic little snow mound.

We went Skiing on Saturday on a artificial slope... well it was covered in snow but still... anyway on the way there, just about every canal or lake was covered in skaters, I've never seen anything like it. Though still no elfstedentocht haha.

We actually got to go Skiing in the woods behind where we live, that was quite the experience.... learning there's hills in the Nederlands

We are gonna get a bowl of here in just a little while. I was waiting until we ate supper and now we are both too full to enjoy any

Edited to add: Oh my goodness, I had forgotten just how cold snow ice cream actually is. I don't know why it is so but snow ice cream is much colder than regular ice cream. It is good though. I don't normally eat ice cream this time of year but it is kinda difficult to make snow ice cream during the summer months
