65 gallon pond

This is a thread for my 65 gallon pond, so that I'm not confusing myself using my other pond blog lol

This is a small natural looking rock pond, with a waterfall. It is buried 1/2 in the ground, and the rest is built up with dirt.

The stock consists of, as of right now, a male Oranda Goldfish, named Brain, and a female Ryukin, named Swimmy McNibblekins, both around 2 inches in the body. Soon join them will be a rescue Oranda with mouth issues, who is presumed to be female at the moment, around 4 inches long. Joining them will be some Rosey Minnows, I think, to add some interest and movement.

Pics of all the fish and the pond will be up as soon as possible

No, I have 200 pounds of out door dogs and I have never seen so much as a feather of a shore bird out there

Just blew 170 bucks at Home Deopt for all the wood (minus the lattice) to build a gazebo over the ponds I'm also in the process of planning a filter for the little pond. A bucket, a small pump, some rocks and plants

In preparation for Tropical Storm Issac, I've removed the waterfall, opened the pump flow so that it's shooting water up and making a fountain type thing, and drained the pond 1/2 way. I've also removed all the floating plants and put them in a bucket in the garage, do they wouldn't wash out. Everything should work out just fine. The storms not supposed to be too bad.

Hey guys! Stopping in with an update, good and bad.

Good first. Cleaned out the pond today, and added a new fish! A calico fantail, from the looks of it. I think it's a female, but it's hard to say. She was stressed in these picks. At the store she was much darker, almost all black, including her fins.

The other fish all look great (or did when I started...), as well. Took pics of them while the pond was filling back up.

Magneto. Thinking he might actually be female. That would explain the gut he got a few months ago. Come spring I'll be able to tell better.

Swimmy. She actually behaved for this pic!

Luna. Here eyes are growing all lol

Brain, and his cute little spots. They are receding quite a bit. I wonder if he'll grow up to just be all white or a red cap...?

Ok, so now the bad. It's not horrible, but it shouldn't have even happened in the first place.

So, I was putting the fish back in the pond after it was filled back up. I had pulled the sponge off the pump so I could clean it off in the water the fish were sitting in after I put them back in. Due to the annoyance of hooking the pump up to the waterfall and bog filter, I had to keep the pump running while I hooked it all back up, so when I got done, I just left it on, and started adding the fish.

Next thing I know, all the water stops flowing! I pulled the lily up, thinking it was the bulb stuck in the pump.

Nope.

So I panicked and pulled the whole pump up, and I see poor Magneto sucked to it! He fell off when he was about 3 inches from the surface. I pulled the lily out into the grass, then put the pump on the shelf, and started netting around as quickly as I could until I got Magneto out. Poor dude was bleeding from the gill, and had some blood already in his pectoral fin.

I had to put him back in the yucky old water they were sitting in while I got a 4 gallon tub set up for him. I dumped a bunch of Prime in it (lost count of the drops), put in a Tetra 3I filter, and some Kordon Fish Protecor, and added him straight in. He seems fine now. Swimming normally, looking for things to eat off the bottom. There's still a bit of blood in his gill, but he doesn't look like its hurting him... I'll keep him in there for a few days with water changes and Fish Protector, and see how he does.

Hello AkarI your goldies are beautiful as ever

Sorry to hear of magnetos accident but you acted very quickly and sounds like he will be fine. Well done on acting so quickly

Lil update.

Moved Magneto back to the pond. He's looking better, and eats well, as always.

I also did a little water change, and dosed more algae killer. Found the remains of my new fish in the bottom on the pond... I think she was tank raised (the lfs gets their goldfish imported from Japan), and it's winter here, and getting really cold at night. So, I think that's what did her in. Oh well, I guess. Didn't really need 5 goldfish in there anyway...

Update:

No visible signs of life in the pond, other than the occasional black mass of Luna. The pond is so dang green! I've been thinking about moving the fancies into the other pond for the winter and attacking this one to get rid of the algae. Not sure if I'll do that or not, as I don't want them to get out competed for food by Feebas and Seeking. However, I would be really nice to actually see my fish once in a while

Update again!

The cold has finally killed off the Endlers. Luckily I planned for this, because I do have several of them in the 20 long. I was curious to see how they'd make out when left outdoors in the winter, and it obviously wasn't very good LOL Oh well, live and learn I suppose. The Mollies in the other pond (one wild and one domestic) are still doing great. I want to try Danios out there at some point, I think.

But other than that, everything is great. The Goldfish are fat as ever LOL They will actually be moved in soo because I got a 55 gallon for Christmas I'll move some of the smaller Commons to this pond to keep the cycle, though. Its winter, so the smaller space shouldn't bother them much.

Wow, it's been a while

After a scare with my largest common, Feebas, both the two big guys have been moved to this pond, and the 150 now houses the fancies and the 4 smaller commons/comets/Shubunkin.

Seeking and Feebas have been separated for about 2 days, and since they've been reintroduced, they haven't strayed far from eachother. Fishy love

Anyways, here's an updated pic of the pond.

I need to pull the bog filter apart and drill more/large holes in the bottom piece of PVC. This requires the complete dismantalization of the filter. That's a lotta rocks to pull out @.@ Since I can't lift the thing my self, and it was removed from the pond for construction, that'll have to wait till I have some help.

No sign of Feebas this morning... It was still early, though, so she could have been shoved up under the waterfall. Seeking came out to see me, though. I went in to get some food, and then forgot to go back out before I left for class LOL

Update time!

Feebas and Seeking are doing great. They seem to like not being swarmed by the smaller fish LOL Its been too cold to interact with them, but I has warmed up a few times enough to give them some food and watch them for a few minutes. I'm wondering if I'll see any fry when it starts warming up...

Went out to feed the ponds this morning around 8:45 (the fish are really active then!) and saw Seeking giving Feebas a run for her money. He's a persistent one LOL She started stopping abruptly to try and throw him off, and he'd dart past her, and do a double take I'm gunna say there may be fry in the future. I'll let this play out, and not interfere, though. I really don't need more goldfish... LOL

A little update for you guys!

I have found the perfect balance to a clean pond! I noticed after cleaning the pond a couple weeks ago and then forgetting t I feed the fish for several days straight, that they were putting a serious number on the algae growing on the wall. Where the water would normally already be back to green at that point, it was still clear! So, I've been feeding every two or three days, and lettig them nibble the algae in bewteen. So far, along with regular dosing of AlgeaFix, this is working really well. Now if only I could get the 150 gallon pond on a good schedule...

This pond has been upgraded to a 125 gallon pond. I'm much happier with this pond, not because it's bigger, but because it has a nicer shape, and goes with the other pond better. It does give me some more room to house my goldfish, though

This pond will used primarily for fancy goldfish, but it will also house Milotic, a Shubunkin, and Gimpy, a comet with no dorsal fin.
