60 gal (tall) with Marineland 450 overflow

I installed a marineland 450 in a 60 gallon tank (tall). The marineland 450 is having alot of over flow. I filled the basket about 2/3rds full with bio-rings. I am still using the stock intake till I can get a sponge intake filter. Is the overflow common, do I have too much bio-rings in the basket? Any help or suggestions would be of great help!

Are the wheels still spinning? Also, I’m not familiar with that little valve on the top, I assume it’s controlling flow? Have you tried adjusting that? And you could always try it with less rings and see if that worked

Take out the filter cartridges. See if that fixes the problem. Don't really need them as long as media box contains sufficient alternative media.

Wheels are spinning.. I am thinking less rings as well. I am going to try and get to the store for the intake sponge filter, in hopes that will create more pressure. Then less overflow. Thank you for the reply!

I will be removing the filter cartridges soon Iam running them with floss and some other mechanical I purchased off of aquariumcoop.

I run two Marineland Emperor 400's. The media boxes are stuffed with bags of ceramic media & foam sponges. No cartridges & no overflow.
I've used the Emperors for over twenty years. Really good filters.

Did you ditch the bio wheels? The more we all talk about it the more I think the bio-rings in the factory media basket are causing the back flow problem... since the main intake flows right into them rings. I assume you have the sponges below the rings?

I use all the bio wheels. I actually have one of the 400's stuffed to the top with sponges. The other 400 has bags of ceramic media stacked about halfway up the media box. Works great.
Don't discount the bio wheels. A lot of people think the wheels are just a gimmick. I think they are very beneficial.

Right on thank you! I guess I need to try a few different variations for the two chambers to get the best out of my equipment! I believe the 450 is more than enough filtration for a 60 gallon being it is rated for a 90 gallon. Thank you!
