have you taken a look at bottom dwellers?

KuhlI loaches are pretty cool and interesting, I am not sure how much room clown loaches need and you need a few but if other members agree on them I would definitly recommend them.

 

For bottom dwellers, I would do a school of zebra or polkadot loaches.

 

I almost bought yoyo loaches when I got my firemouths. clowns would be alright, but don't they need a bigger tank. I know they grow extremely slow though. they look so much like my tiger barbs too. I want variety in my fish.

All the ones you named, Aequidens Pulcher, Cleithracara Maronii, Microgeophagus Ramirezi, are South American.
Some Centrals that would work in a 55gal with what you have may be.
One of the smaller Herichthys species (if avaliable)
Cryptoheros Nanoluteus (if you can find them)
Archocentrus Sajica
Neetroplus Nematopus
Herotilapia Multispinosa
Archocentrus sp. "Cutteri"
