Careful if too many lay eggs at the same time you might end up with discus wars.

BRUH! MY WHITE DISCUS IS LAYING EGGS!!!

And... Nevermind...

The Proven Pair has denied it and has eaten all the eggs...

It is frustrating to say the least. Welcome to my "World", exactly why I stopped posting "Eggs Again" as mentioned the pair are still spawning but you know the story...

Good Luck, for you!

Ok so you’ve had 2 different pairs lay eggs already? If so there telling you something. Have either set layed eggs more than once?
Yeah I don’t really understand. Both have only layed once.

The Turq and Orange discus just had eggs again. This is their second attempt...
Is something wrong?

Nothing wrong this is what they do. Going to be tough to get they to go all the way. The stress of other fish will make them eat the eggs. If you want to try breeding put them in another tank. But before you do it think about the future with discus fry. You’ll need a few more tanks to grow them out and than somewhere to move them on (sell them). Or you’ll need a few more bigger tanks .

Well for one thing, you're doing something right since they are healthy / thriving and comfortable enough to spawn for you. Still learning myself, so no real help, other than what has been mentioned. But you might want to give them a breeding cone to use instead of the glass. It's a shame coralbandit no longer participates here, he has had "Great" early success. Might just be that Magical Spring Water he has in NY? He did mention he responds to PM's.
Please share any suggestions he has.
Good Luck!

If you actually expect the eggs to thrive (hatch); i would be a little concern that a 54 gallon tank is pretty small for several active pairs of discus. I have angels in my 120 and i question if the 120 is large enough for more than 1 pair of angels (ok angels aren't discus but ...). I currently have 3 angels 1 m and 2 f (i have 3 other angels on time out due to bad dynamics); the 2 f *hate* each other and the male frequently sits between them keeping them from fighting (or too much fighting) and they like to lay eggs at the same time next to each other and then spend two days 'fighting' over the eggs (don't worry they spend just as much time fighting when there are no eggs).

Ugh the lights just turned off again and it won’t turn back on... The other light I use on the side is so weak that it doesn’t even make it any lighter. I’ll have to see if it’ll turn back on soon.

Nope, this light just keeps going off randomly, it is probably because I press too fast but still...
It is snowing tho.

Light works again!

Eggs are all gone again, I cannot wait until the 3rd try. There seemed to be a lot more tanish eggs on day three compared to last day three where all of them were eaten or white.

Trust the process and hope they'll figure it out.

They had eggs again...
Water is clear but I have trouble with green algae and hair algae. What fish can I get that will somewhat deal with this. It is just the clinging algae that is the issue. I really like blue phantom but I would like to hear from everyone here.

Only concern i have is that his tank is pretty small... Mine loves to dart here and there and everywhere.... His tank isn't tiny but it does have a fair number of critters. I suppose when it gets larger if it is problematic he can always 'return' it to the shop though it might take a few weeks to catch

Ok thanks! I have to order online though. I really plan to get Kuhli loaches and more Rummynose which don’t help my case. Are Golden Nugget Plecos fine, though I do like SAE and will most likely get one.

PlanetCatfish.com - Baryancistrus xanthellus • Loricariidae • Cat-eLog

Larger than bn pleco by 40%; hostile to bottom dwellers (have corys?); and love vegie matters.

In all honesty i would think it would be too large for you tank - again it could work but your tank is not exactly large...

Yeah I’m not sure how bad it would be with Kuhli Loaches, I’m probably going to be avoiding Corydoras because all my Corydoras are so skittish. Also is starlight or blue phantom Pleco any better. I know there is bristolenose but I’m just looking at my options.

Plecos really don’t eat to much algae. An SAE may work but to really get it to work you’d need to starve it first. And it being a discus tank that ain’t goin* to work. Plus they get big. Ottos will work but may also go after the discus slime coat. Nerite snails will help. But I think you may want to get a uv steralizer. May need to do less light time too. What type of lights are you using?

I got a UV Steralizer, I’ve got one that the discus have been laying eggs on and there is one on my filter. I think the huge problem is that one side is next to the window. One side has a bit of algae and the other has none. I’ve been using the vivagrow 24/7 and the weak light in the back used for extra light and if the other light goes out.

Put a towel over the tank on the sun side. See if that stop the algae. It’s real hard to go against the sun.

Alternatively replace the window with a polarized glass.

I ended up having a similar issue. So, I picked up a half dozen SAE about 1.5". After QT for a few weeks added 3 to the now 55 Planted Communtiy and they took care of it. Of course they have doubled in size about 3" now. They do zoom zoom around the tank but the Discus are fine with them. Need to get some pics.

Good Luck!

I will say that i very much like SAE they have a lot of personality and i definitely plan on getting 4 to 6 of them when i setup a larger tank - just be aware they are not small fishes when fully grown.

Thing with SAE is as that get older they eat less algae. They will eat whatever you are feeding your fish first before algae.

  • #189
Are you sure? This thread suggest they will keep eating as adults - but it also note there are different sub species and you need the correct one:

Mine still eat algae but i don't think it is quite full grown yet.

Thanks everyone. I’m just a little scared about my yellow discus and algae wafers. But I should be able to workout something.

3rd Try / 3rd Day:

I swear water is clear it’s just the camera and algae... There appears to be a bit of white eggs but a ton of tanish.

Ok so I have a 10 gallon QT which is kind of small but should be fine. What fish should I get for it and how long do I QT? I’d also want to get another Pearl Gourami for my 29 Gallon because if you haven’t heard to story basically it had a fungal infection I treated it and it died a few days later I may of acted to slowly. So I want a male Pearl. Maybe later or, but what should I QT or get?

GAH! This is driving me crazy...
Discus will eat 1st and 2nd feeding but will not touch the third and it is getting annoying! What do I do? I am just wasting food because they will not eat the third feeding.

Usually, 3-5 hours between each but feeding 2 and 3 are a bit closer together. I am feeding 2 cubes of each food.

Not in all at once. I usually only do one cube of bloodworms, usually I use two cubes of black worms for the 2nd feeding and then one for the third.

Yes that’s fine for a days feeding. 4 cubes for the day. Feed 2 cubes in the morn. Put a lot of food in them before you go for the day and than 1 cube at each of the later feedings.
