What's your tank size?

If you can do more, I suggest adding more. They become more comfortable and will hide a lot less in a larger school.

Hundreds would be the perfect number but since very few can accommodate that many 6+ is recommended for most schooling/shoaling fish. I don't see 5 being an issue but more would be better.

5 in a 10 gallon is better than 2 in a 3 gallon, but theyre one of those fish that do better in bigger groups and larger tanks. Theyre a VERY active fish, so a 10 gallon isnt really recommended. A 20 long is better, and then you could do a large school of 20 fish. But Ive seen small schools kept in a 10 and if youre giving them the right temp, good food, good filtration and some live plants, keeping NO other fish with them, it can be okay.
