5 Gallon Shrimp Tank?

So I plan on getting some new plants now but am also thinking about getting some shrimp. I know if I put them in my 55 gallon Espi, my tiger oscar will eat them all before they can create a good colony.

Would a 5 gallon work for shimp? or would it be better to just put them in there with her?

5 gallons is good for shrimp. What kind would you like? I have some red cherries and amano shrimp along with some snails in my 5 gallon tank

Don't put shrimp in with an oscar unless you are just doing it to give her a nice meal.

I was thinking the blue velvets or ghosts so I could give her a nice meal when I have everything situated.

Blue velvets are very pretty shrimp.

Be aware that ghost shrimp are difficult to breed since the larvae need brackish water.

Then I might just stick with blue velvets then.

Edit: Or blue dreams. I like the darker blue

Nope that's amano's. Not ghost shrimp. Ghost shrimplets need a very mature tank in order to breed.
Edit: the blue dreams are an expensive snack.

My tiger oscar ate my neons... She was only the size of a female guppy when I got her... I had 11 neons and in 2 days they were gone... I got her minows to eat for $0.69 and she won't touch them. I think she likes me spending so much so she has an expensive meal....

There are different kinds of ghosts sold. Most need brackish water like amanos.

What kinds are you talking about? I'm talking about the 33 cent ones.

Ghost Shrimp is just a general name. You can get a few different types and some of them are nasty little suckers! Like Whisker Shrimp get sold as Ghost Shrimp and I had one that are my betta fish. I would stay away from them!

Don't do that, actually. If they interbreed, you lose coloration with each generation until they turn into their wild coloring.

Okay so I should only stick with one or the other then?

Stick with one color of cherry shrimp. Blue Dream or Red Cherry. One thing to note about red cherries is that if you want full red coloration get Sakura Red or Painted Red Cherries. Painted Red being more red. (There's also a Bloody Mary color)
