I have a guppy that I had isolated in a breeder box, it dropped 5 fry this morning, how do I know when she stops giving birth to fry? when should I transfer her to the main tank? the breeder box separated the mother from the fry, just kinda concerned bout her cuz she's been in that box for a couple of days.

for feeding, dropped pellets into plastic bag, dipped toothpick into water, then bag, then fry box, the fry have begun eating it already.

Update: 6th fry dropped just now, how many should I expect?

First off, CONGRATS!

I have never had guppies before, but I do have swordtails, LOTS! And for my swordtails I usually just walk in my room in the morning and they have already given birth. But when I do walk in and they are giving birth I usually wait about three hours or so and just put them back in the tank. One easy way to check is here Gravid spot (dark triangular spot behind the fish's stomach). If it is gone, she should be done giving birth. Does your breeder box have a divider for the fry, or is it open?

Good luck on raising your newborns... Before you know it you will have a tank just for you fry. Here are some of my newborn and young fry... Also some pics of my Gravid females...

it has a divider, but the bottom plate has some tiny holes, they are escaping through them.

Ummmm.... If you want to keep this batch you could get a ziplock bag, fill it up with aquarium water, put it in the divider, put an air stone in it, and try and put your newborns in the bag. Or you could wait a month or so until your female is ready to give birth and be 100% prepared. That's the best thing about live bearers... They just don't stop giving birth!

I say it takes about 3 hours at the most. Get a 3 way breeder box and you don't have to worry about them getting eaten

If you got a heavily planted tank, you can just let them drop in the tank. If your doing this for fun, then don't worry about it in a few months you will be figuring out if your filtration can handle 60 fish in your tank. A month or two after your fry are born they will get knocked up too.

Edit. Guppies are called million fish for a reason

last one is gone, I now have several well fed fish in the tank and an empty breeder box, took out the box, the bottom panel was moved, it left a tiny crack on one side where the little ones escaped.

she only had 7 of em tho, the next batch will be bigger right?

Once tank is cycled I plan to move all of em into the 20 gall, 5 fancy males, 5 fancy females, 2 regular males and 2 regular females.

Should be bigger as they birth usually dozens at a time.

I'm sad now that they're all gone though.

In my experience with live bearers, the brood size does get larger with age (I think that the most I have ever had was 39 fry), but also when they do get very old the size of the brood starts to go down.

Another thing you may want to do if your serious into this is get some guppy grass egiria najas or egiria densa or make a moss wall to give the fishlets a place to hide they are pretty crafty. Or if you like to see them and feed them specialized food you could get a sperate tank just for them would not need to be much 2gal or so filter recommended ugf or sponge.

With that many guppies I promise you , you WILL have more fry than you can handle even if you do nothing. Without at least a 1m to 2f ratio, I wouldnt be surprised if some females get harassed until they die.

I think I can send some males to a 5.5 gall and improve the ratio. Having some trouble telling apart the males from females with the fancy guppies tho.

It is not really that hard females are bigger and less colorful mind you that does not mean colorless. And the but area of females gets a spot when pregnant it can be orange or most typically blackish in color. Also males will have different shape fins around the back area makes are thinner and more pointed.

Also female guppy for the most part all look the same males can have all sorts of sized tails and different shaped tails. And are a lot more colorful.
