5.5 Gal Shrimp Tank

Hey everyone,

I set up a shrimp tank a little while ago (I'd say about 6 months ago) and it's doing great. I originally had 10 rcs in there with one danio (a lone survivor, I felt like him being alone in a planted 5.5 gallon was better than being flushed) I had two berried females but now only one is berried and no sign of any babies. I think I might have sucked them up in a recent gravel vac session Now I have one berried female that I know of and no idea when the eggs might hatch. I also recently added crs and I know they have slightly different water preferences, but I think I'll be fine.. hopefully. Ammonia and nitrite are at 0, nitrate is at 5 ppm, and the ph is at 7.5. I know that might be kind of high, which leads me to my questions.

1. Can the crs breed in my ph?
2. Any special requirements for crs to breed?
3. My danio has started to chase and nip some rcs. No visible damage/injuries, but I'd imagine the rcs would be a little stressed. (Some of the shrimp are bigger than the danio though..) What should I do? I'd rather keep the shrimp than one danio but she's kind of my lucky fish (survived a situation I thought would be impossible to survive)
4. I was hoping the danio would eat SOME shrimp but not all.. but is it possible the danio ate all the baby rcs? Any thoughts and or solutions?
5. Any advice at all?

Btw I had to break down all my other tanks so nowhere else to put the danio

Thanks for all your help!

Also the danio is a CPD.. sorry if I didn't say that earlier

I can't really help you about the CRS as I don't keep shrimp apart froma failed attempt at Ghost Shrimp (they got eaten by Lily my past Betta) but I can tell you that your danio is nipping the shrimp because he is probably unhappy and/or stressed. This is because danios are schooling fish and you have her on her own. I sugges rehoming her. Good luck

I'll be watching this with interest. I'm currently cycling a 10 gallon tank that I hope to fill with CPD's and shrimp.

Please never flush fish. I'm glad you didn't, but it shouldn't even be an option. Ignoring how terrible it is for the fish, it could also be very bad for the environment.

1. Can the crs breed in my ph?

Your pH is a little high for CRS. Do you know your GH and KH?

2. Any special requirements for crs to breed?

Here's some more info:

CPDs should be in groups, and this lone fish is likely very stressed. I would either rehome her or get a larger tank (even a 10 gal would be great - and Petco is having their $1 per gal sale now) and add more of the same species (8-10 more would be ideal).

4. I was hoping the danio would eat SOME shrimp but not all.. but is it possible the danio ate all the baby rcs? Any thoughts and or solutions?

Unlikely that one fish decimated your baby shrimp.

5. Any advice at all?

See above!

Btw I had to break down all my other tanks so nowhere else to put the danio

Thanks for all your help!

For whatever reason rcs do meh in my tanks, and crs do great. I always do the sss+ type when I buy more to add to the colony. These are said to be harder to keep, thus the price difference. I'm in the 7.4-7.8 range in ph, and mine bred, so hopefully your ph shouldn't be an issue. I would recommend starting with the lower grade crs, just to be safe. Also texasdomer is highly recommended when it comes to fish keeping advice. Your fishy would thrive with friends.

Thank you for all your responses! I've decided to rehome the CPD (as much as I love CPDs, I think the little guy would be better off in a group of his own kind). The 5.5 gallon I'm currently housing everything in looks kind of ugly, so I want to post another thread regarding a "renovation" project for the 5.5 gal. Thanks again for your help!
