I may also scrap the grass... I love the look but its yellowing constantly. Its demanding too many root tabs (stays green for maybe 2 weeks before it yellows and needs more again)

I have these too, not sure what they are.

Nice looking tanks, wish I had nice wood around these parts.

 

Tomorrow I plan on tearing out all of the tall grass. As awesome as it was, its yellowing and melting. Many places on the bottom and all the tops. Trimming the tops off make it worse.

Ill miss it but I'm going to try out some other plants.

I know I want another sword plant and maybe more crypts because those do very well in my water.

One of my favorite Crypts is Bullosa, it's more brownish and has a really nice crinkled texture to the leaves. It think it would contrast nice with your mostly green plants.

Is that grass cyperus helferi? I have it as well, kinda came to the conclusion that it is just a bad choice to keep unless you have a high-tech tank.. in mine they do really well for about 4-6 months (once I even managed to multiply them), but then they irrevocably start to decline. Aside from needing a lot of nutrients it is probably because cyperus in general are capable of growing in shallow waters of about 2-4" with the rest of the blades emersed. I think they just don't cut it fully submersed in 10"+ of water unless you can provide them with a superbly ideal environment.

Nah this plant is for sure aquatic. It washes up onshore in thousands of mats along our river.

Okay so tentative plan.
I will be for sure removing the tall driftwood. I may salvage some small parts fron it though. Plan drawn up does not include that at all though.

I want a nice full sword for the center of the tank.

But back two spots I have listed for needing plants... I'm thinking water sprite if its in stock (I saw it last time I was there) and something else--ill have to see what's available.

Okay so here are the new plants. The smaller sword has algae on it, which is perfect as new farlowella will need easy food while he figures out what is food here.

Wanna take a crack at identifying these...






Also, was excited their plant tank had a blue ramshorn. I asked for it.

But, I'm happy with my plant choices. I moved my log horizontally. I think it makes it a bit better.



The "plant patrol" have already started their attack on the algae snack on the one sword. Platies are algae eating machines.

I'm hoping it stays red with root tabs and ferts. And bright light.

The small sword has red patches on the leaves too, so itll be neat if they stay too. Mind you it had a butt ton of algae that the platies cleaned totally off of it within hours... lol so could be it was grown in super bright light

I imagine it should be fine, mine has always stayed fairly red and i've not done anything special for it

 

So day 3 with new twig, planet catfish confirmed this one is a female vittata, which is good news since my larger one is male. Shes doing good, filling in a little already, though she hasnt shown interest in the blanched carrots I offered yesterday. My new blue ramshorn enjoyed them though.



The new girl is good at hiding. Twice I couldn't find her and she ended up being perched on plant stems.





And our boy Twigbranch came out for a close up as well. He is enjoying grazing off of the magnolia leaves I put in.

This killed me. Tree tried to swim and land on the branch, but instead landed on Twigbranch and clung to him instead. He was not amused lol he swatted her off.

 

And bonus, my other 3 tanks. They don't progress or change much so I don't have much updates on them.

My background is just black bristol board taped on.
My light is one of the hood lights from an aqueon 10 gallon hood, a T8 full spectrum bulb. Its basic but it works. Its literally a kit light, nothing special.

I don't have luck with java fern. That stuff just doesn't grow for me. I had an adult plant. I got a bunch of baby plants off of it... but the adult plant I killed it. The babies I have left have not grown longer than an inch. Ive had them for months. I don't have advice for java fern lol

Hornwort I had before, it boomed well but then it all just started dying after several months. It does best floating though.

Ive had the best luck with swords and crypts. They grow nice, especially swords.

Water wisteria likes my 20 gallon a lot. It stays so bushy and bright. Unsure why it grows different in my other tank though. It does well floated I'm finding.

 

Javas grow so slow submerged its not even funny.

Yep. Ive had the same tiny little leaflet for 5 months now. Has it grown? Not a smidge. None of them have. Ive given up hope on them lol. My anubias grows faster. If I had to decide which low light plant is better, definitely would choose the anubias.

Cool addition to the 46 tho That double tail is neat

 

So been thinking of getting another tank, min size 55 gallon and separating this tank between it and that. I want to up my mixed cory shoals. I can't do that in this tank with the stock it has.

So going with a minimum of 55 gallon with this proposed stock plan:

Replace the tukano cory with the weitzmani. Dunno why aqadvisor doesn't have weitzmani, but its the closest cory. I don't anticipate finding more agassiziI cories. Its not one even sold in my country aside from being an accidental by-catch.


The 55+ will be a south american tank while this one becomes an asian tank.

I ended up taking 3 bronze cory rescues who are in bad shape. One is touch and go but seems more promising today. Theyre in the main tank, since I'm already medicating it anyways.

Because of this, ive changed up some stock. The 3 platy boys got moved to the tank with the cherry barbs and my ghost shrimp got moved to my betta tank, though I'm down to 2 girls. My boy shrimp has passed.

I also lost one of the black neons, the smallest individual so I'm not too shocked, but still saddened. I do plan on making sure the school stays at 6, but the 4 remaining have made themselves comfortable and aren't shoaling tight anymore. They sorta go off and explore on their own and come back together if something spooks them. Theyre really delightful little fish. Very good manners, even with mealtime. Theyre not pushy like the danios but aren't afraid to join in and snatch up crumbs.

The asian tank will be stocked:
1 dwarf gourami
10 kuhlI loaches
10 java loaches
11 zebra danios

Itll be a nice project.

Anyways, the 3 rescues.

 

I love how you say minimum 55g. Makes me crack up.

But the stock is a little on the high side I usually say keep the stock closer under 85% but if you were super diligent with WC 2x weekly you could easily do that. But then you have the cory problem, they will easily reproduce and become millions so maybe take out 50% of the cories and let them grow themselves out?

Well already have 50% of the cories haha no fry or spawning from them despite daily water changes etc.

Ideally I want 100g+ but if a good deal comes up on anything 55 gallon and up ill settle for that. I was looking at the footprint of the 55 gallon compared to the footprint of both the 65 and 75 available locally and the footprint on the 55 gallon was better for my stock being mostly bottom dwellers

As for Aqadvisor % I wouldn't pay much attention to it, a lot of the regulars here, their Tanks would of exploded years ago if it was accurate just keep on maintenance and you'll be fine.

I used it to get a general idea of what the smallest I could go so I could plan, while upping to the minimum recommendation of schools. While the other part of me says that mine do shoal together, even if its abnormal, and its one of those "if it aint broke...". But at least id have the potential to add more of their kinds to make them happier still.

If I go bigger, say 90+ id like to add a school of porthole catfish. Theyre a dream fish of mine still, but id be full stock in a 55 gallon with the cory schools. And the cory schools are my first priority.

And I want a nice school for the black neons. I adore these tiny fish theyre so very cute. Very polite little fish, different from my skirt tetras. They just chill around the plants wherever they feel like, flicking their little tails and they come up to the glass when they see I'm there. Theyre not shy, but they have more personality than the skirts do (my skirts just are eating machines haha love them though but only one of my skirts show any personality or curiosity). And they aren't little terrors either. Theyre down to 4 until I pick up some more this week, but even so theyre not shy or hiding, and theyre not trying to kill everyone like the skirts do when their shoal drops below 5 (had this happen where our 5th died and they immediately went on a warpath until we added two more). These little black neons are perfectly mannered little citizens. They also don't boss everyone out of their food like the danios do lol just politely grab their own little pellet and take off.

Anywho, minI update on the rescued cories. The tiny tiny one no longer has a sunken belly. Hes colouring up and starting to swim more steady. I had to turn the flow down for him because he was getting tumbled around. But already a couple days in being treated for parasites and he looks so much better. Less skeletal too.

Here's a before photo. You can see why I couldnt turn these poor things away. Bronze are my least favourite cory, but they were in such bad shape I wasn't going to say no. The most I could do is try to save them.




Now this is today of the same fish. His belly is no longer sunken in and hes filling in.



^ he was the one I wasn't sure would even make the night. Hes sooooo small. But, its day 3 and hes doing good still. I named him Blip because he is just a tiny little blip.

Theres also Jaxx, who is the 3rd bronze in the rescue. In better shape than the other two, just some mild fin rot of the tail. Most skittish of the 3.

Blip beside his finless buddy, Hobbs. Hobbs probably won't regrow that pectoral fin since the spine is completely rotted off to a stump. But very robust fish despite the severe fin rot. She is looking better too.

Go bigger! Easy to say I know but you're probably unlikely to get another big tank in the near future and if getting a 90 means you can get a dream fish, go for it!

Id adore 120 gallon even, but my area is so expensive for tanks, id be looking at $1000 and up for that. Just for a 55 gallon I'm looking at $300 for the basics. And I can't many.

If I can arrange a ride I can go state side for the dollar per gallon sale at petco, since I don't have petco. Just petsmart.

My 52 cost me £300 and that was painful enough, I got luckyish with my 112 gallon, I picked it up on ebay for £100 though it cost me £90 for a van service. I still need to build a stand, then buy lighting and adequate filtration. My wallet is crying.

 

@misnoodle at the states dollar per gal only goes up to 40 breeder I belive. on black Friday it was only 29g.

Wow I love kuhlis, look so cute and rare to me.

 

I have the video uploading, ill post it in the morning since I'm exhausted.

Took out the big piece of driftwood. It was going fuzzy in some spots despite being in the tank for over 6 months. To be safe, I removed it. I kept a few small segments though.

Added 2 more black neons, bringing me to 6.

My javas are crazy since I just did a water change not long before this video.

Stock currently stands:
11 zebra danios
13 corydoras (trilineatus, paleatus, weitzmani, agassizii, and aeneus)
10 java/kuhlI loaches
1 dwarf gourami
6 black neon tetras
2 farlowella vittata
Plus assorted small snails

 

I have the video uploading, ill post it in the morning since I'm exhausted.

Took out the big piece of driftwood. It was going fuzzy in some spots despite being in the tank for over 6 months. To be safe, I removed it. I kept a few small segments though.

I got two of these guys, Twigbranch is my subadult male and Tree is my juvenile female. Twigbranch is the larger of the two.

Tree is on the upper left, Twigbranch on the lower right. They can grow to 9 inches long. Twigbranch is about 6.5 inches now and Tree is just nearing 4 inches (she was 3 inches when I got her a week ago)

They are farlowella vittata, generically called "twig catfish" or "farlowella catfish". There are many similar species of farlowella, mine are the vittata species which is the most common. Theyre similar to plecos (they have sucker mouths and spend their time clinging to the glass or driftwood. These guys prefer tall thin branches set vertically in the tank.

They are a vegetarian species, feeding mostly on algae, supplemented with algae wafers and vegetables. They are a very delicate fish, many people struggle to keep them alive. They don't handle large water changes well but also need to have very very clean water. Smaller more frequent water changes are better for them and they need a very mature tank to be added to.

They can potentially live 15+ years if you can get them to thrive in your tank. Many times they are out competed for food.

Mine are named after Warriors characters, if anyone reads them and have read the newer sagas.
