I just bought an empty, used 46 gallon used tank. The previous owner left inside the gravel, decorations and fake plants. I noticed some red spots on the inside glass, and the owner said he had some red algae in the tank.

1) What should I do to clean the decorations and fake plants? Boil them? Mix some bleach or peroxide or something and soak them?
2) Other than a good vacuuming before I fill it and start cycling it with the new filter (getting a canister), do I have to do anything with the gravel (which doesn't seem to have red like a few of the decorations).

Thanks!

1) I'd do a soak with a bit of bleach or peroxide or vinegar or something, and scrub, or boil and scrub with castle soap and rinse.
2) I'd boil that. And rinse with castle soap and hot water.

Don't use soap or bleach, I suggest vinegar. If any residue of the bleach or soap leftover could be detrimental to your fish tank.

Pure vinegar or a mix with water?
