45G display and advice

HI

I've finally got my black background so am able to set up my 45G. I've been running my filter in an established tank to seed it.

I plan on adding 5 plays tomorrow, followed by 10 cory catfish the day after if the ammonia doesn't spike. I have 2 questions.

1) if I move the new filter over now and leave it running in the new tank to get it going, will the BB last until tomorrow before I add the platys or will it starve without an ammonia source ? This way I can get the tank to the right temp overnight.

2) any tips on how to display the tank? I plan on adding Java fermI and aubias when I get round to buying them. How is it looking apart from that? Obviously missing water

Why don't you put the heater in tonight and before you head to the fish store than put the filter in while you go fish shopping. Alison

Will the water be alright without any filtration just sitting there for the night then?

Yes it will be fine and it will get nicely agitated with the filter while you shop which usually takes me a lot longer than I think it will, because of course I have to look at everthing that is swimming, crawling, flying and running around in their cages and then also check out some supplies, and pick out the fish I wantETC. There is no more room at the house. I already have 2 small dogs, one cat, three small parrots, and three fish tanks, and a very patient husband of 51 years. Alison

I think we both know the only thing that can leave that house to make room for pets is the husband!

Alison, my patient husband also has to put up with 3 dogs (I volunteer at the animal shelter...let"s just say we are down to 3 lol) 11 mice and the fish tanks. Plus I just bought a new tank.
Also purchased a 5 ft flight cage...nothing in it YET , lol

Any aesthetic tips? I'm actually really happy with how it looks and will be even more so when I add some nice deep green plants. Always looking to improve it though if any ideas

I think it looks great! Yes live plants will really make it pop, so I'm excited to see it after that as well!

He would probably say the opposite. HAHA. I have to say that I am at my limit., although when the 30 gal is up and running then I will have three empty 10 gal tanks.Alison

Hey mark, so you have a filter on there now cycling and ur gonna put a new on or you are starting with nothing? If you don't have a filter running it yet that is priority one. If u have an old one and are adding a new one I would have an overlap of filters till bacteria can form on the new one. I cycled my 65 gallon for a week. Using a prime can quicken it, but if ur starting all brand new let that filter run the full tank no fish for a while, adding food or a bacteria source. I was also setting up for an oscar and convicts which had a bigger bioload. As my oscar grew they bumped up to a 125

The OP is has run the filter on an established tank to seed it. The question was whether or not it should be added the night before fish go in, and if the bacteria would starve.

Yep that's correct! I've got it in there with 5 platys now. Will test for ammonia tomorrow and if it's zero get my catfish in there

Plants either live or silk depending on your preference will give the fish places to play in and hiding places to relax in and at least a couple that go from bottom to top. You can also do a mix of both while you wait for the real ones to grow in more , which is what I had ended up doing and now have mostly live plants that are low light and don't require extra ferts or co2. I have anacharis, water sprite, anubias, marimo moss balls. They are all easy and the water sprite and anacharis can be grown planted or floating or both. Alison

Sounds great!

My never ending struggle with nitrates in tap water is back. Fish all have red gills already . Nitra Zorb on the way though so hopefully that'll sort it out! Besides the gills they seem well and ammonia is sill at zero so going to get 8 black neons in there tomorrow keep the BB supplied

I've ordered 3 tall artificial plants. Real plant delivery to my local shop isn't for a few days so will have to wait

Sorry to triple post another question.

I've put a Nitra Zorb pouch in my Fluval u4 filter. It's quite compact in with the sponges go mechanical filtration. Is this ok? There was a carbon filter in there which I don't really need so replaced that. Just want to make sure this won't cause any issues with filtration? Water should be able to flow through the ouch right ?

Temporary measure just to provide hiding spots until I get real plants. Will also get rid of the barrel once I can get it planted properly !

Fish are loving the hiding places already tho
