40 Gallon Goldfish Tank Questions!

I've been posting way too much lately, but I'm really excited for my mom's fancy goldfish to get an upgrade to a 40+ gallon tank and I have so many questions! Is 40 gallons enough for 2 fancy goldfish and two bristle nosed plecos? We have them in a twenty gallon right now, and I need to know...

Can I move the goldfish and plecos to the other tank immediately if I add the established filter first?
Is 40 gallons enough for these fish?Which filter would you recommend?
Which stand would you recommend? I was thinking something from ikea, though I couldn't find anything good.
What substrate would the plecos like the most?
Thanks!

I do not know if these fish would would be ok in a 40 gal. Though I do know that bristle nose plecos and goldfish are not temperature compatible so they shouldn't be kept together. I would either rehome the plecos or the goldfish.

Fancy goldfish can also do well at 72-73 degrees, so a bristlenose pleco may be alright, but you also want to think about it being at the low end of their temp spectrum. I go by the 20 gallon first fancy and 10 gallon each additional fancy. However, if there is more fish in the tank and it being a pleco, then I'd rethink that because they are as a huge waste producer like the goldfish.

They are temperature compatible, and I've never had any problems with them bothering each other. Doesn't mean I won't, but they completely stay away from their tank mates for now. What's the issue with keeping them together?

I agree completely. Would a 40 or 50 gallon work if I over filter it?

Thanks for the quick responses!

You are getting more surface footprint with the 40 over a 55, but less gallons. If it were me, I'd go as big as I could to a 75 that has a good footprint. I think BN pleco can be territorial as they age? I could be thinking of something else. But I do know that fancy goldfish will graze on the bottom, and they are pretty much all over the tank.

What model filter do you have? What kind of fancy goldfish do you have since there are different kinds. If these are fantail you can only have 2. Male BN plecos do get territroial when they mature. In a 40 breeder I would only do 1. They also need driftwood so with goldfish I wouldn't do it.

Hm. I would absolutely get a 75 gallon if I could, but I have some spacial restrictions, and I can't have the tank much wider than three feet. The tank will also be on the second floor, so I wouldn't want to hurt the framing. Would 75 gallons damage the floor? BN plecos do get territorial, but only with other plecos of the same gender, I think. Lucky for me, I have a male and a female! I would go for a 55-60 gallon if I found the right tank, but ideally yes, I would definitely go bigger.

Yeah 75 gallon is a bit heavy! What type of goldfish do you have? Anyway your setup should work! What model filter do you have? If you use HOB you want a total of 400 gph!

Yeah, that's the only problem with a 75! They will be heavy! My fish room is on a concrete slab, so I don't have to worry about that, but there is no way I would put one in my bedroom (wish I could LOL) since there is a basement beneath and that scares me! lol

I don't have a filter yet, but I do have a 20-30 gallon HOB on the 20 gallon! Thank you! I think I have two young veil tails .

Haha yeah, I have a 55 gallon in my apartment and it scares me to death!

Ok, so for the 40 breeder I suggest to get a AC110! Personally, I have an AC110 which has 500 gph thus you won't have to worry much about the goldfish and plecos waste! It also has good suction, its really strong that I had to put a prefilter since my tank is a tropical tank.

if you do 2 fancies and 2 plecos, I'd suggest the aq110 too. If you find the current too strong you can baffle it will batting across it and it won't be too much for your fancies. I might would even add a sponge filter for more bb. I'd also recommend 2x large water changes a week. There's gonna be a lot of waste. With those 4 your heavy overstocked.

Okay! I was thinking a 45 gallon, would the AC110 work with that tank too? That's my only question, aside from if I can transfer them immediately if I put the cycled filter in as well. Thanks!
