40 Gallon Breeder With 2 Fancy Goldfish - Which Pair Of Aquaclears

Planning a 40 gallon breeder setup with 2 fancy goldfish. Should I get 2 Aquaclear 70's (400 gph) or will 2 Aquaclear 50's (200 gph) be enough?

I already run an Aquaclear 50 on another 29 gallon tank that I have, so I would kind of like to stick with the 50's so that I have interchangeable parts. However, we are talking goldfish here, so should I get the 70's for the extra media capacity?

2 50's should be enough. But honestly why worry about interchanging things. You hardly ever replace the media and if something like the impeller fails its not like most of us keep spares anyway. I keep no extra parts on hand since its such a rare accurance.

I would suggest a Tidal 75 and only 1 is needed to do the job.

The have these advantages over all other HOB filters.

1. A flow knob to control 80% of the water flow. Each notch is a 10% increase or decrease so you can manage your water flow to slow your water so it stays in contact with your media longer which is better for beneficial bacteria.

2. Draws water from three locations, top (skimmer), middle and bottom for better water filtering, not just the bottom.

3. Another knob to totally shut off the bottom intake if you only want to filter the middle and top of your tank only.

4. If the mechanical media at the lower portion of the media basket ever gets clogged it has a slightly higher bypass in the basket so the water will still be filtered through your media and continues to run efficiently.

5. Media basket locks in place so it will never rise up pushing the media up high possibly causing an overflow and flooding your floor.

6. Removable no spill media basket comes out for easy cleaning using the lid as a no spill carrying tray. Don’t even have to turn off the unit either.

7. Self priming w/submerged pump so you never have to worry about it not starting and recovering from maintenance or loss of power, especially if you are not home.

8. Includes the best media, Seachem Matrix, that handles 100 gallons that can harbor anaerobic bacteria needed to reduce Nitrates.

9. Self cleaning impeller. From Seachem Support: The self cleaning feature of the Tidal Filters can be explained by the structure and build of the impeller housing. There is a groove in the Tidal 55 that goes through the slot where the impeller stays and it will continuously clean the impeller of any debris or buildup. For Tidal 75 and 110, where the impeller goes that continuously flushes a little bit of water through the back to keep it cool and quite clean. The 75 and 110 have the same mechanism.

Either one will work fine, but personally I prefer to stick with one filter. I use a Tidal75 for my 40 breeder that has 3 goldfish.

Tidals are good b/c they don't require any priming.

on my 29G with 2 comets and 1 oranda, I have two AC50's.

Thanks for the feedback, y'all!

I do prefer running two filters unless it's a small tank because I like being able to clean one of the filters at a time while keeping the other (and its bacteria colony) unmolested. Plus the backup preference that I previously mentioned. Also so I can put different filter medias in each of the different filters.

Has this worked well for you? I do travel on occasion for up to 2-3 weeks at a time, so I don't want to have to worry in case I miss a water change/gunk cleaning.

Have you found that this works well in a HOB? I was actually planning on adding this to my canister filters on another tank at the next filter cleanings. It's my understanding that it does need an anaerobic environment to really work.

Works great. Have Matrix fully loaded in my Tidal 75 in my 75 (along with a Sunsun303b loaded) and Tidal 55 in my 10. Nitrates are a thing of the past.

Awesome, thanks Cichlidude! I think I'll give it a try in my HOBs too.

yes, it works for me, it provides more turnover rate, but not as much current compared to a single higher flow filter.

I clean both filters at the same time during my weekly water changes. no problems.
