40 gallon breeder ideas?

So I just scored a 40 gallon breeder! I'm planning on doing some diy filtration (canister or trickle tower) not sure on what yet but ya I'm just looking for some ideas on what you guys would do or stock in a free 40! I currently have a planted 5 gallon tank, and am looking to do something different. I'm leaning toward a species only angel tank, or maybe an African cichlid tank, idk what would you guys do!

You could have a pretty massive shell dweller community. Theyre small, but you couldhave a bunch.

angels would work and allow you to have spce for a clean up crew, if you wanted.

another cichlid that goes well in that size tank re kribs, I like them alot, good colors.

You could do something like this?

1-2x angelfish
8-12x rummynose tetra
1-2x Apistogramma sp or rams
6-8x warm water cories (all one species)

You can do a species tanganyika tank, many cichlid forums agree it can be done in a 30+ in a 40 you could do juliochromis, calvus, lalupI or birchardi. I'm setting up a calvus and shell dwellers in a similar sized tank. You could even get a synodontis catfish in with sufficient filtration and tank layout.

The species mentioned are well worth researching if a tang tank takes your fancy.

Nice, ive started cycling today. Its taken a while building this tank but one thing ive learned is not to rush in and to get it right first time.

I'm thinking sumbu shell dwellers, that's if I don't get calvus because they are basically dwarf calvus. Let us know what you decide on, I think personality will be my main focus with the shellies

@YiselPerez - don't forget to dose ammonia so the bacteria don't starve!

I wouldn't put other fish with shellies - from what I've heard/read, they don't like other fish in their tank.

With a 40 breeder, you definitely have room for a pair of dwarf cichlids if you wanted them? You could also do a pair of convicts by themselves or jewels with dither fish.

I have seen on other threads that a nice schooling species is Cyprichromis genus that would work well with any shell dwellers. I'm thinking that would be a really good looking tank some multis on the bottom and some "cyps" cruzing the top.
