I have kept fish for 6 years now and have just gotten a new 40 gallon tank. all I have is gravel and a filter so I am open to any community stocking ideas preferably with as much fish as I can get.

Thanks for your ideas :D

You could do a couple of tetra schools as well as a school of corys and/or a smaller pleco variety.

My goal tank is a 40 gallon (36”x18”x16”) my plan is one betta, two schools of tetra (10 glowlights, 12 green neons), 12 mystery snails, 10 Corydoras Aeneus (5 bronze, 5 albino), 1-2 clown plecos or one bristlenose pleco. I like using AqAdvisor for the stocking percentage (I try not to go above 80%) but it isn’t really accurate about the water changes.

Edit: If you have an aquarium that has less bottom space you won’t be able to have as much stock. If your bottom is less than 36”x18” 2 schools and a pleco would be better. Whether you decide to do one school of free swimmers and a school of bottom dwellers or two schools of free swimmers (like tetras and rasboras).

You can click on "Aquarium Details" near my user name to see what I have in my 40 gallon tank. When the neons and the lone cardinal tetra die I don't plan to replace them (I'll get more rummy noses and serpaes instead), but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it.

For the most possibble fish, you could keep lots of very small fish.

Pygmy hatchets fish, pygmy cpries, micro rasbora, ember tetra, Sparkling gourami. Dwarf pencil fish, chilI rasbora, galaxy rasbora. chain loaches, rosey loaches, otto cats. Dario, Dario/scarlet Badis, least KillI Fish.

That’s no breeder, but it could be a 40, waiting on dimensions.
If it’s a 40
I would scratch off the betta, as they often don’t do well with larger fish like gouramis.
Scratch off the ottocinclus, as they need established heavily planted tanks and like to be in groups.
You have 3 different schooling fish, I would choose 2 and get 10-12 of each.
make sure you get a male and 2 female pearl gourami.

Pretty sure that's a 37 gallon but they are very close. 40 breeders are 36x18x17, just for future reference

wonder where I got it from. Lol
I need to update that. I'm down to 2 neons, and they're only there because I couldn't catch them, or the cardinal. When I do then at some point I'll probably add a few more serpaes and rummy noses.

By the way, you probably already know this, but by most standards that tank is significantly overstocked. However, it's working fine for me. I've stocked it slowly, and the tank is at least moderately planted (which is why I'm having trouble catching the last few fish), and that helps.
