Getting a 40 breeder soon. Curious about filtration. Not a fan of canisters or sponge filters. Anyone out there filter a 40 breeder with a single aqua clear 50 or 70 ? How does it do ??

I know you said you aren’t a fan of canisters but I have canisters and HOB filters and the canisters are much, much, much quieter than the HOB. And they do a better job of cleaning IMO. If you still want an HOB then I like marineland biowheel filters

I had one with an Ac 70. Worked fine with weekly Changes. Then I put an ac 30 on alongside when I needed seeded bacteria Bc I was changing the sponge on the 70 and so now they both run. But was fine with the 70 lnly

It’s not about the noise. I just don’t like having a big honkin canister under my tank And I have a 3 year old who I don’t need messing with it. Stand I have isn’t a cabinet or anything that I can hide it in

Are you going to be having fry in this tank? I've been a big fan of the aqueoun quietflow filters. In tanks with fry or shrimp I buy a pre-filter made for a fluval edge. It fits over the inlet in most cases. Slows the flow a little and keeps the Lil guys out

I have an Aquaclear 50 on mine. I also have a sponge filter in a back corner behind some plants that's driven by one of those USB nano air pumps.

I have the 40 breeder as well. I run the AC70 and AC50. They work very well and I most likely could do without the AC50. But somehow the 50 got in there and it now stays.

AC filter noise can be irritating but I have learned how to remedy the possible issue.

1) Keep the working parts clean. Impeller, motor stator, and the gray cap that sits over it. To clean the motor stator use a tube style brush to get in there. If this gets dirty the rotor will be rubbing inside the stator. Not good and this can stop the impeller which will fry the motor quickly.
The shaft should be cleaned as well as the rotor spins around it.

2) Make sure the impeller is assembled correctly. The white part with fins must be pushed/snapped onto the magnetic rotor. Not just set onto the rotor. This is important.

3) Make sure the shaft is fully inserted into the motor. With the impeller removed and the shaft in place, press it against a hard surface and make sure its pushed in all the way. Don't over do it. But firmly press it into the motor. Use care as to not bend or distort the shaft.
If the shaft is not all the way in. the impeller sits up high and can strike the gray plate.
I have quieted these filters with this step. What happens is over time pulling the impeller out can also pull up on the shaft. It is not obvious either. This is very important.

Now for my question. How in the **** do you keep the tops from rattling? I have tried taping them down and weighting them down to no avail. I am now leaving the tops off and would love to hear any suggestions!
