40 Breeder Build

Alrighty... Sounds good. I had to sift through a bunch of old media files but I found a bit of video I had taken of my old 40B. I got the rocks from a landscaping quarry site in south Portland. They were apologetic about charging me $5.00 for a small wheel barrow full of rock... I already told you where I got the slate. The Riccia was grown in a ten gallon that I had setup - complete with CO2 no less. Never underestimate the usage of a small tank. I recently got Electric Blue Rams to breed in a tiny show tank. [Alright, I admit it was an astounding surprise]
Anyway... I think you might like to see the walk-through of the tank. The audio picked up some stupid TV program so ignore that.

[69MB]
<could not link an MP4 for some damned reason... So I Zipped it>

You can see in the video the initial Riccia carpet. It grew to about 1/2" thick before I started trimming it - the trimmings floated and continued to accrue more Riccia which I found usage for. You can keep it, sell it... use your imagination...

Yeah 10 gallons are really useful for growing plants since the height is short thus the plants are able to get the most out of the light

I decided to use the other piece of wood as it was more of a cylinder shape! I then super glued loose java fern and propogated the babies from the one that produce a lot. I then got all the hornwort out use net to scoop all the Eco complete that was in the middle. I then added the driftwood back and then the hornwort.

Yay for shrimps It just makes me wish my betta liked shrimps for more then just food that is. My hornwort has decided it would rather be a floating plant, it just won't stay in.

LOL! What substrate do you have for the hornwort?

I have it in sand, it's been floating for a while now.

Interesting! Mine goes in the sand really well and I believe I only have 1-2 inches of sand, do you also bury the first 2 needles?

Oh yeah I buried it up to more then just the two needles. I've been thinking about tying it to a rock loosely then burying that in the sand to see if that will make it stick as it were. If not I may just have to let it float lol.

Here's an update:

Did a 50% water change

I found a way to make my hornwort "forest" denser. Basically I get 5 stems and a string of fishing line(about 15"). I then wrap around 1 inch from the base and tie the hornwort together. After doing this for all my hornworts I had 7-8 bunches. However now there was 6 hornworts that took the space of 2 strands.

Yes, sadly I haven't had another tank for it and couldn't rehome it , there are holes and a water pump that keeps the container circulated. Had the betta for about 4 years, so its getting pretty old.

Same, I wonder if the plastic cover was better since there was more surface area, but it was shallower. I might try to get a different container, although most will only be a gallon or 2 since the betta moves very slowly
