Is the pre filter before it goes to the hob?
The pre filter attaches to the intake tube. Normally you have 2 pieces to the input the one that is connected into the impeller and then the second part is the intake. Sometimes fish and shrimps can get sucked through the intake! I lost about 6-10 shrimps and 3 rasboras. The pre filter is like a sponge filter its just that the tube is meant to fit on a filter.

I feel like I need to add more oxygen to the tank! Any opinion? My filter doesn't generate a lot of bubbles since I normally have the water all the way up so the you can't see the water line although sometimes it gets lower due to evaporation! I;m gonna switch the Fusion QuietPower(got it for free) with my Whisper 60. One will operate the HOB breeding tank and the other will be for an airstone!

Unless your tank temperature is above 80 degrees you probably don't need the bubbles assuming there's some rippling effect from the water returning back into the tank from your HOB filter.

Bubbles are not oxygen disbursing into the tank... so more bubbles does not mean more O2.

The ripples created by your filter, airstones, and other various water movement devices are what allows oxygen exchange to occur. Bubbles, particularly microbubbles, are actually a bad thing, because they can sometimes harm the fish's slime coat. Now this doesn't usually happen when they're created by a filter or airstone, but it is worth noting because it can. I've actually had fish with micro-bubble issues from filter malfunctions.

ok I really really like this tank! I seem to not be so great at scaping compared to everyone else lol. if I have the space and money (I already have 4 aquariums, 10, 10, 30, 55) I am probably going to copy cat yours because I like it that much even the stock list is great. I actually have a spare 36 gallon bowfront stand, so maybe I could just buy that tank and slightly decrease the stock to be appropriate for that size.

I didnt pay attention, how much did it cost to build the stand? every stand I purchase seems ridiculously overpriced for like particleboard. and the metal ones were bent funky in the corners :/

Thanks! Did you know from 9/25 - 11/5 there is the $1 per gallon sale at Petco?!? I guess now's the chance to fuel your MTS! I believe there will be many new build threads during this month! Feel free to ask me any questions about my setup! I know its sometimes annoying to have to go through page by page in each thread! Also my stand build pictures got deleted sadly due to merging of something??? but yeah the next post I will add the pictures!

That's actually way cheaper than buying a stand! My dad can cut the wood for me and hopefully I can put it together myself

Way sturdier than most of the stands they sell now days too! I bought an aquarium stand for my son's snake tank and the hinges on the cabinet door tore out less than a week later. The fancier stand my aquarium is on is already showing signs of wear and tear with a chipped edge on the finish, a little water bloating on the seams and I am really careful to mop up.

I was thinking my next tank stand would be a buffet cabinet but I think I might just try and build one first, although I can barely hang a picture properly (stud finders are hard!) this might be fun.

Yes my stand cost me less than $15. I got 4 studs so multiply that by 2.9 and so I built the stand for only $11.60 . I already had the screws, wood cutter, stain, and screw driver. If you had to by the screws and stain add maybe $10 so its still be less than $20. Many of the stands you buy are like $50-$100 may be more depending on how big your tank is. I also had my dad cut the pieces of wood! I helped to screw them in!

Forgive me if I'm being nosy but how much did the tank cost you? You got it during the $ per gallon sale right? I want to get a 40 breeder for my goldfish but have to save up money for it lol.

No, problem I don't mind questions since the best thing to do I'd share your experience.

But yeah, I got it for $40. Are you doing a whole new setup such as new filter and stuff

  • #216
Well I already have a 75G filter seeding on my other tank it's just my mom got a new goldfish so the 30G I had is way too small now lol. I'm not too worried about lights on this tank it'll be somewhere with natural light and I obviously can't do any plants. We do have to find a stand or pay someone to make one, nobody in my family can build that kind of stuff lol.

I have this for my 40 breeder. I don't have space and tools to build else I would have built mine. Also you can keep lot of plants with Fancytail GoldFish, for comets its different.
On petsmart the 40breeder was for $30 on Sep27(25% off)online purchase, I wish I saw this post before that.

Yep! Here's a pic of the pothos!
I put in 1 stem with 1 leave (was a rooted cutting) and the part underwater turned mushy and brown.

What am I doing wrong?

Yours look so healthy!

So one thing I believe is that its best to have 3 leaves on a cutting! What kind of light? Your roots might just me adjusting to an aquatic life but if the stem is turning mushy then the plant is failing. My pothos are mainly growing under medium light (terrestrial plant term not the aquatic) since its facing toward the bedroom windows Do you have a pic of your pothos?

Thanks

These ones are in a planter. I grew them from about 4 single leaf cuttings. The one that was in my tank I threw out.

The planter is in a window sill, but the tank only has indirect sunlight.

EDIT: ok my cutting in the tank had a root nub (idk the correct word lol but I think you'll know What I mean) but no actual roots yet. Could that have been the problem?

Yeah normally you want them to have the root to be grown and not just a stub. Normally it takes a couple weeks for that stub to become a root though. I find it easier to just cut where there is a establish root. Pothos are one of those plants that absorb nutrients by the roots thus if the root isn't establish the plant might not be absorbing enough water and nutrients to keep it going. When the plant in your planter grows bigger you can cut it and add it to your aquarium! I normally use airline tubing holder suction cups! You put the plant between the claw you can adjust the level of the pothos so that you can submerge it under the stem or leave it so that the water level is just at the stem. Here's a pic:

So does the pothos make tank algae free? Saw a YouTube video where she had an algae scape tank, but got compeltely annihilated after she put a pothos in the filter.

Genobreaker There are a lot of variables when it comes to algae so I wouldn't assume that it was the plant that did it. Extra nutrients, too much light, too little light, bad water quality can all produce algae.
tyguy7760 Pothos can help with those yeah.

I wouldn't say it *will* make your tank algae free but it has the ability, depending on factors. The reason her algae died off was probably due to being out competed for nutrients. The pothos sucked up all the nutrients the algae was used to getting.

That's why sometimes during an unwanted algae outbreak, wanted plants start to kind of die.

So you only have the very end of the stalk in the water? I had airline suction cup things from a bubbler wall I bought and never used but since I never used it I threw it out like a week ago

I have a 3ish inch gap between the light bar and the lids on my 55 gallon so when my plant is a decent size I'll just wedge it in there.

Should I remove any leaves that will be submerged? So that only the stem is under the water?

I'm also wondering if my cichlid will destroy the roots or pay no attention. Most of my fish keeping experience is trial and error lol.

Well I know why it happened, she explains it how out competed the algae in the video. I was more surprised at how fast it outcompeted the algae? I guess I should've worded what I said differently. As in are pothos powerful sponge as people say? From what I seen and heard sounds like they're on par or better than duckweed which imo is the best excess nutrient sucker.
