Hi I’m looking for suggestions on what to stock in a 38g tank. I’m looking to lightly stock the tank with a tropical community. I haven’t stocked a tank for a few years and just want to make sure I do things right.

The person whom I’m stocking the tank for is interested in seeing reds and blue in the fish although it’s not necessary.
He also is highly interested in the perl gourami.
I haven’t done enough research on this gourami to confidently create a stock using them.

The tank is a odd shape and I don’t feel comfortable determining the stocking alone. It’s a marine land 38g bowfront tank
17.125" Deep
32.25" Wide
25.719 " High

I’m looking to get a centerpiece wood with a low-medium amount of plants
Any suggestions on fish is highly appreciated
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope you have a wonderful day!

Hey,

I am assuming the person you are doing this for is a beginner. If so, I would go for some colorful but hardy fish, that school nicely and are fun to watch without being too demanding. Based on the assumtion that you have a good filter set up on the tank, I would go for:

15 Neon Cardinal tetras
3 Pearl Gourami (1 male, 2 female)
8-10 Guppies
2 or 3 Corydoras

Try . It is a handy tool to help with your stocking.

Divide the tank into sections for bottom, mid and top dwellers.

Then go about selecting a couple of fish for each level.

Finally, you can narrow it down from there to the final choices

Some suggestions for bottom dwellers.....

Corydoras - 6 minimum, they like to be in a shoal
Kuhli loaches- same as above
Bolivian Ram- 1 pair
Clown Pleco- 1

Mid dwellers...

Neon Tetras or Neon Cardnial Tetras, 12+ ( for the "red and blue" you specified)

Top Dwellers...

Male endler guppies

I can't comment on Pearl Gourami. My only experience is with the Sunset "Thick Lipped" Gourami.
