36 gallon tank startup

Brand new member here, lurker for awhile. Wife got a small 5 gallon tank, didn't know about cycling. I absolutely love any aquatic life so I stepped in and have fish in cycled and got it rolling perfect. Question is, we got a 36 gallon tank now, no water in it. I plan on fishless cycling this one. By advice or links, I need a step by step walk through on how to set this up the right way. Never had a tank this big and want to have it all done right. Any advice is incredibly helpful.

I get nitrogen cycle and basic testing, I guess my main questions are how big a filter, bubbler, type of media do I need? Freshwater tank, undecided on fish as of now but will do research to figure out what's best. I just get lost when it comes to carbon media and bio filters and all that. I love to know why, not just that it works. I'm a newby at the science of it so forgive me

I've heard take gallons, multiply by 4-5 and that's how many gph you need. Is that legit or like the 1 inch per gallon "rule"? Just trying to do this thing the right way and figure out reasoning behind it. TIA for working with me, I love aquatic life but I'm lacking in that knowledge department.

 

I use an aqua clear HOB filter. It has a Sort of removable tray that you can out whatever filter media you want. I have a sponge/filter floss from old tank/bio rings. All stacked up works really well.

 

what size? I read somewhere the AC70 was fine for 36g tanks but wanted advice for someone that actually used it.

 

Just look up what size you’d need for a 36 gallon. They usually spell it out pretty clear. I usually get a filter on the bigger side. Like if I had a 10 gallon tank, I’d get a filter suitable for up to 20 gals
