36 gallon stocking options?

I was thinking of perhaps a species only tank or maybe 2 species

Probably 8 - 10 of each. Maybe a few more if you have good filtration and don't mind doing fairly frequent water changes.

Make sure if you do cory cats to have sandy substrate. They like sifting through it and finding food. Rough gravel will be sharp on their barbels (is that what they are called?) when they search for food.

Just to clarify, I did say pygmy corys. Some species of cory are larger than I'd recommend for your tank.
