Yes, that’s great! Goldfish release a lot of ammonia through a lot of waste. Limit your feeding them to once a day. And only give them enough food that equals the size of their eye ball. They will do fine. Once a week. Try doing a 50% water change. But you could try less at first to see if that’s needed. Use a syphon to clean substrate but don’t change filter until every two weeks. You can play around with this idea as you need. But it’s very important to do water changes often. Like weekly. And clean substrate. By leaving filter in longer. Even as long as a month. But kinda clean the filter in siphoned water weekly. That way you don’t break the cycled tank. I hope this helps.
Our ammonia levels where actually good before I changed the water. We really haven’t had a issue with that actually

I wouldn’t change your filter media like the previous person suggested. That holds all of your beneficial bacteria, removing the media would damage your cycle. I never change my filter media, ever. Not until the sponge is falling apart and that rarely happens. Whenever you clean the tank just take the filter media out and give it a few squeezes in your old tank water.

He has a carbon in tank media filter. They come in boxes of 6-12. This is the pouch that holds the carbon. I usually change this out in my aquariums every month. Am I not supposed to?? Mine also has a little sponge media. I never change that. Am I doing this wrong? Please advise

Carbon you can change whenever because BB doesn’t grow on activated carbon! I change mine every other month. Everything else just gets a few squeezes and it’s good to go.

This isn’t necessarily true. It will grow in the mesh that’s on the outside of the Cartridge. The reason the activated carbon should be replaced is because after a certain period of time the carbon no longer has any effect. That being said, carbon isn’t necessary in an aquarium and the activated carbon in a filter renders medications you add to a tank useless. So that being said if you wish to have activated carbon in your filter, I would change it every month. And take the carbon out or turn off the filter if you’re medicating a tank.

My filter setup has 2 filters and a bio wheel I only changed one filter cause I checked it and I had algae in the filter and it was old. I kept the bio wheel the same and the other filter. That’s the only reason I changed that filter. If it wasn’t for the algae on the filter which I was trying to get rid of in the tank I wouldn’t have changed the filter at all

I agree, look at sponge filters

When I first setup my tank I had a whisper 40I with a all in one filter. I filled the tank with my rocks and everything put the filter in I added aquasafe to get rid of the me calorine in my water I waited 48 hours to be extra sure. Then I added my safestart right before getting fish. It did fine with the carbon in my filter setup
