3 Single Tailed Goldfish In A 75 Gallon?

I have a 2.5-3 inch common goldfish in a 29 gallon right now, and his 75 gallon upgrade is now currently cycling! I'm so excited! My question is about tank mates. I wanted to get him some company, and I was thinking maybe 2 Shubunkin goldfish? I plan on monitoring the water very closely and doing 2 weekly water changes (50%). I'm using a Fluval 406 Canister Filter.

ALSO PLEASE READ! I'm planning a pond in the meantime for all of my goldies to eventually go into. The only reason I can't right now is we plan on moving house in the next few months and building a tub pond is not only not ideal (it's summertime here in FL and we're in a neighborhood with an HOA, so in-ground ponds are a no-no) but it's also impractical. I want a thousand gallon pond and I want it up and running in the next year.

Now that that's out of the way! Will 3 single tails grow well in my 75 and not be stunted, if I keep on top of water changes? Should I just go with 1 friend for him for now, and add another later (the only slight problem with that is I'll be ordering from LiveAquaria, and shipping is SO expensive, so I'd like to order them both at once if possible)?

Thank you for reading my ramblings! Haha. Any advice is appreciated.

Short answer is no.
I had a similar situation, both kids won at carnival, ten gal, 38 gal, 75 gal... outgrew all in a few months. Now living in a 450.
FYI on the 75 with two I had two sunsun 304b canisters, a aquaclear 110, and a tidal 110... while you figure out a better living situation you should consider upping the filtration.

I would advise just 2 so your goldie can have a friend if you are confident the pond will be going in the next year. You can get away with 3 if you are really going to stay on top of things but I really wouldn’t push it. With that said, I had a comet and a common in a 29 Gallon for about 6 months. They continued to grow and were about 4 & 6” when I finally got my garden pond finished. They have been in there since February and the largest is now about 8” and the smaller is about 6”. They weren’t stunted. The hardest part is keeping the nitrates down in the tank. Even in my 55G I have 2 fancy Goldie’s and a baby. 3 days after a thorough cleaning, my nitrates are already back up to 40 and I have to do another water change. If you can handle that, possibly 3 times a week, it is doable but on a very temporary status. Why do you need to order your fish? Commons, comets, and Shubunkin are very cheap at PetSmart. I paid 35 cents for my common and comet and $2.99 for my Shubunkin. Online is going to be expensive. Good luck!

Thanks, I’ll look into another filter.

I want to shop online because the conditions the petco/PetSmart fish are kept in are horrid. I don’t know what I’d be bringing home. The fish from LiveAquaria are quarantined for the necessary time and ready to go straight into the aquarium. It would just be a healthier fish overall.

Thanks for your input, I’ll stick with 2.

Live aquaria doesn’t qt to the best of my knowledge... had some issues with fish I ordered from them. Not saying to avoid ordering from them, just be sure to qt or be prepared to treat the whole tank if something shows up... way more expensive to treat a 75 gallon then a hospital tank....

I agree. I have ordered fancy goldfish from them but still QT. Things can come up with the stress of shipping that bring on issues. Personally, I would never purchase something as cheap as single tail goldfish via shipping. IMO, it’s a waste of good money. Actually, single tails are very hardy and I have never lost a cheapy from Petco/Petsmart. It’s certainly your call but you’ll find plenty to spend that money on when you get fish.

These are all good points. I have another option as well, and that is to buy the fish from LiveAquaria and have it shipped to my local Petco, that way it won't be mixed with the other fish in the huge tank. And I don't have to pay shipping.
